If you, or a family member, use a CPAP device you are aware of the filter, or filters that such devices employ. Unfortunately, many, if not most, CPAP machines have a very poor filtration system. Some of the most expensive machines utilize a simple replaceable paper/cloth type material that overlays an opening in the filter compartment. Since this design has no frame it does not lay completely flat thus exposing open areas surrounding the material that allows bacteria to pass thru. These filters are suggested to be replaced on a specified time period by the manufacturer. Some units may actually have two filters, one of which may be incased in a plastic frame. In most cases these filters do a very poor job of filtering the air that is fed to the mask for you to breathe. Unfortunately, the debris that is hopefully trapped before it is inhaled by the user is difficult if not impossible to detect.
The Wilerda CPAP filter is a filtration device that snaps on to either your machine’s output port and your hose that connects to your mask, or between your hose and its mask connection. I prefer the latter.
I’ve discussed the Wilerda CPAP filter concept with my Pulmonologist. He whole heartily agrees with my assessment and agrees that most CPAP machines have an extremely poor filtration system.
There is no method of cleaning the Wilerda CPAP filter. The manufacturer of the filter recommends filter replacement every 4 weeks. You probably will not notice any immediate difference or improvement over the original system supplied by the manufacturer, however, over the long haul your body’s internal parts subjected to the air you breathe will. Perhaps less chance of a cold, or some disease/bacterial/virus infection is the overall benefit. Certainly, well worth the small financial investment! Afterall, what have you got to lose?
