WeGuard Antenna ~ A Backup For TV Reception When Cable Fails

WeGuard ~ A Backup for TV Reception When Cable Fails…. (Please note that Google’s BlogSpot, the provider we use to publish this monthly column, has changed the allowable format style. So, if the column’s format looks a bit strange it’s due to Google and BlogSpot, not THE GADGETEER.) BOB SKIDMORE CORRESPONDENT © 2021 BOB SKIDMORE ALL RIGHTS RESERVED If you’re a cable user you receive various broadcast channels via cable, or Roku, or even Apple TV via the Internet. What happens if and when your cable and Internet has an unexpected outage? Perhaps simply a local outage, or the result of a weather-related disturbance such as a hurricane. Did you know there’s a way to receive some broadcast channels by simply selecting TV in your input menu of your flat screen. To do this you need to take a few steps to prepare for such an outage. I’ve tested the WeGuard Indoor HDTV Antenna, an omnidirectional device that allows your TV to receive some local TV channels. This small antenna can be placed next to your TV, or for better results, on a window sill. Once plugged into the TV’s RF antenna jack and the USB power lead into a small USB power adapter, not supplied, you’re ready for the next step, programming your TV to accept the newly installed antenna. When the antenna input is selected, you’ll find another menu that asks you if you would like to auto-select broadcast stations that transmit their digital signals over the airwaves in your area, so press yes. The number of stations you can receive in this mode will depend on several factors. If you have obstacles, concrete walls and large outdoor objects in the way they may hinder the TV’s ability to program in these channels. Considering that receiving some programming is better than none when cable service fails the WeGuard Antenna could be an inexpensive and easy solution. Remember that not all stations you’re accustomed to viewing can be received. This means that some networks like ABC, NBC, CBS and PBS may, or may not be available if you can’t receive their affiliate station’s transmission. Services like CNN, FOX NEWS, CNBC, THE WEATHER CHANNEL, HBO and SHOWTIME do not have local transmitters and thus will not be available at all. So, it’s easy to see how an indoor antenna like the WeGuard can provide an easy backup during a cable outage. Something is better than nothing! It’s easy to install at very little cost and it works! SALT REMOTE ~ A Remote That Should Have Come With Apple TV

SALT REMOTE ~ A Remote That Should Have Come With Apple TV (Please note that Google’s BlogSpot, the provider we use to publish this monthly column, has changed the allowable format style. So, if the column’s format looks a bit strange it’s due to Google and BlogSpot, not THE GADGETEER.) BOB SKIDMORE CORRESPONDENT © 2021 BOB SKIDMORE ALL RIGHTS RESERVED In a previous column I reported on the included remote for the Apple TV 4K/HD device. As mention in the article the remote that Apple supplies with this product leaves a lot to be desired. They added a track pad feature that mimics what you find on many laptops. While useful on a laptop it is very clumsy operationally on a remote. This is the case with the one supplied with Apple TV. SALT by TW Electronics has manufactured what I would consider to be a giant leap forward in making the Apple TV remote experience much easier and efficient. It even can control your TV and comes preprogrammed for most Samsung flat screens. You will immediately notice that the control buttons are similar to those found on traditional remotes. Let’s take a look.
(1) Power on/off: With this button, you can turn your TV on and off. A long press of this button, more than two seconds, allows you to switch off the Apple TV only, unless the CEC is activated. In that case your TV will be turned off as well. (CEC is short for HDMI Consumer Electronics Control and is an HDMI feature many TVs and peripherals have. This feature makes your devices work better together, but is often disabled by default.) (2) MENU: This button is used to activate hidden options of a page. It also allows you to return to the previous screen. Furthermore, you can use this button to turn on your Apple TV when it is off. A long press on the MENU button allows you to return to the Apple TV home screen. (3) NAVIGATION ARROWS: With the four navigation arrows, you can navigate through the screens and select the icons of the services you want to utilize. The top arrow activates the channel carrousel. They are all sorted by category, and you will also find your favorite selections. The down arrow activates the player’s option menu when you watch TV so you can access advanced features such as info, controls and audio. (4) OK: The OK button confirms the entry in the menu corresponding to the icon on which the cursor is pointing. (5) P a/v: These buttons allow you to switch to the upper or lower program when the user is watching a live TV program. If the program is not live, you will have to confirm that you desire to return to live TV before switching. (6) VOLUME: Volume up/down allows you to increase or decrease your TV’s volume. (7) MUTE: Mutes the sound of your TV. By pressing again you can reinstate the sound. (8) FAST FORWARD: This button allows you fast-forward a program not on live TV. A second press will accelerate the forwarding. A third press will return to normal play mode. You can also return to the play mode by pressing the play button. (9) FAST REWIND: This button allows you to rewind a program. A second press will accelerate the rewinding. A third press will return to the normal playback mode. You can also return to normal play mode by pressing the play button. (10) SKIP FORWARD. Permits you to skip part of the program by jumping forward. (11) SKIP BACK: Allows you to skip part of the program by jumping backwards. (12) PAUSE PLAY: Allows you to interrupt a program. Pressing it again will resume the program from where you paused it. (13) STOP: Allows you to stop a running program. As you can quickly see the Swiss made SALT remote runs circles around the Apple one! Its ease of operation puts you back in direct control without the use of your finger attempting to properly track, or depress what functions you wish to activate. I should mention that while I tested the SALT model of this style remote other brands are out there and some may have slightly different buttons and configurations, but work in much the simplistic same manner. APPLE AIRTAG & FIND MY APP

APPLE AIRTAG & FIND MY APP ~ Finding Your Things, Devices & People Via Your iPhone/iPad & “Find My” App…. (Please note that Google’s BlogSpot, the provider we use to publish this monthly column, has changed the allowable format style. So, if the column’s format looks a bit strange it’s due to Google and BlogSpot, not THE GADGETEER.) BOB SKIDMORE CORRESPONDENT © 2021 BOB SKIDMORE ALL RIGHTS RESERVED Have you ever wished that you could easily track and locate things like your keys, luggage, wallet and even your pets on your iPhone/iPad? How about friends and family too? Yes, there have been many products that make some of those claims, but the Apple “AirTag’s”, about the size of a quarter, versatile design in conjunction with Apple’s “Find My App”, work exceptionally well on more recent Apple products. Imagine having the capability of tracking your baggage, finding your dog, or even more importantly, a family member, or friend? The “Find My” App can be downloaded via “Apple’s APP STORE” if not already installed on your Apple device. See compatibility chart below:
Apple’s “AirTag” uses the easily replaceable CR2032 battery lasting up to a year. It also utilizes Bluetooth and wi-fi in your iPhone/iPad in conjunction with Apple’s “Find My” APP. This app typically comes loaded on most newer Apple devices with an iOS 14.5 or later operating system software. How does it work? Your “AirTag” sends out a secure Bluetooth signal that can be detected by nearby devices in the Find My network. These devices send the location of your AirTag to iCloud, then you can go to the “Find My” app and see it on a map including distance from your location. The whole process is anonymous and encrypted to protect your privacy. “AirTag” users will need to be within Bluetooth range, so about 15 to 30 feet away, to use Precision Tracking. Otherwise, it will be up to the Find My network to ping the lost “AirTag” and update the owner of its general location. It can also activate an audio tone on the “AirTag” to help you find things like keys hidden in a couch. The “Find My” App not only works with “AirTags”, but can also track family and friends who authorize such use. Such activation requires the party you wish to add to accept tracking by you once you have added them to your phone’s “Find My app”. They will be able to see your location at this point and are sent a notification/approval message explaining the app. if they respond positively to the notice sent to them by approving, you will be able to track them too. This is a great tool when totally approved by both parties since it could aid in you sending help if an unknown, or unusual location for longer than normal periods of time is detected by you. This feature is found under the “people” selection of the app located at the bottom of the screen. The “devices” selection locates your iPhone, or iPad. No “AirTag” is required for using these features. The “items” selection allows you to select and find “AirTags” that you select and previously installed. Various tag case designs are available, but not included, for numerous applications including one for pet collars, https://amzn.to/3zSsgKF. The applications for the “AirTag” and the Apple “Find My” App are numerous, and they work well!!! Remember, presently, this neat feature requires an Apple iPhone and/or iPad with iOS 14.5 or later. It’s certainly possible that Apple may expand the app’s ability to work with Android and other manufacturer’s products in the future. GADGETEER’s RATING: ★★★★★ MSRP: $29.95 (AirTag cases are not included. OPOLAR BATTERY FAN ~ A Great Cooling Source For Emergencies & Camping

OPOLAR BATTERY FAN ~ A Great Cooling Source For Emergencies…. BOB SKIDMORE CORRESPONDENT © 2021 BOB SKIDMORE ALL RIGHTS RESERVED (Please note that Google’s BlogSpot, the provider we use to publish this monthly column, has changed the allowable format style. So, if the column’s format looks a bit strange it’s due to Google and BlogSpot, not THE GADGETEER.) This is the second of a two-part series about devices for events like hurricanes, tornados, earthquakes, storms, floods and power outages. Last month we featured the AYL 1800LM RECHARGEABLE LED Lantern. Today, we’re featuring the OPOLAR ZD201 RECHARGEABLE Portable Battery-Operated Fan. What makes this rechargeable battery-operated, eight-inch fan quite unique is its compact foldability while still maintaining an adjustable height range of 14.2” – 40”. Yes, you read it correctly. It can actually go from being a desktop fan to a floor standing model and still collapse into a disc shaped storage capsule that’s under eight-inches in diameter and can easily be stored under most beds. It’s remote controllable with controls for oscillation, timer, on/off, 3 speeds and a natural wind setting. The oscillating angle is 90° with a rotation angle of its head that exceeds 180°. It has one, two, three and four-hour operational timing modes with the built-in timer, and has an under 40db noise level at its highest speed. That’s the same noise level as you may find in a quiet office. It uses a USB charger, not included, with a charging time of a 4.5-5.5 hour charging time. Depending on the speed you have it set at, and if oscillation is used, it can run between 5 to 11.5 hours per charge. This could easily be a life saver when your power is out, or even be useful when camping. A great way to keep your cool when the power is out! A Great Light & iPhone Charging Source For Emergencies

AYL LED LANTERN/CHARGER ~ A Great Light & iPhone Charging Source For Emergencies…. BOB SKIDMORE CORRESPONDENT © 2021 BOB SKIDMORE ALL RIGHTS RESERVED (Please note that Google’s BlogSpot, the provider we use to publish this monthly column, has changed the allowable format style. So, if the column’s format looks a bit strange it’s due to Google and BlogSpot, not THE GADGETEER.) Disasters strike when we least expect them to. Events like hurricanes, tornados, earthquakes, storms, floods and power outages quite often result in the loss of power as well as charging sources for our personal electronics such as our iPhones. Are we properly prepared, especially with sufficient lighting and a charging source for our cell phone and emergency radio? AYL’s 1800LM RECHARGEABLE LED LANTERN may be the perfect inexpensive solution. It can also serve to light up your patio, or a backyard area during Winter months. The water-resistant AYL 1800LM RECHARGEABLE LED Lantern comes in at 1.3 pounds, 3.75” x 3.75” x 7.25”, and provides various LED illuminated intensities up to 1800 lumens. It achieves this with the use of its 46 LED bulbs. These bulbs are shielded by a removable convex reflector cap that provides 360-degree lighting. It can also be removed to allow for more focused lighting. Included are four soft white LED’s and 42 daylight LED bulbs with a lifespan of over 300,000 hours of use and are replaceable. That’s enough light to adequately fill most normal size rooms. This emergency rechargeable LED light features four light modes, daylight, warm light, a combination of both and a flash mode and is dimmable by simply depressing the on/off switch repeatedly. The LED lantern has 2 Lithium built-in rechargeable and replaceable batteries that when fully charged can last up to 12 hours depending on the illumination level being used. A standard 5 volt, or less USB charger, not supplied, is required for charging, but the USB cable for charging is supplied. A non-rechargeable model, the StarLight 1000, uses 3 D batteries, and is also available with these same specifications at a significantly lower cost. The AYL’s 1800LM RECHARGEABLE LED LANTERN not only provides an extremely bright LED light source, but can also be used to charge your iPhone and emergency radio. Two different sized ports for this are located at the back side of the lantern and protected by a marked gray rubber covering. The bottom port is the charging port. Naturally the proper USB cable is required to accomplish this and is therefore not supplied since it needs to match your devices’ USB input port. At the top of the lantern is a movable handle that permits hanging and carrying it. On the bottom you can flip up a hook for hanging it as well. Without a doubt the AYL’s 1800LM RECHARGEABLE LED LANTERN is a must for your survival kit as well as being a neat addition to your outdoor camping needs. Available at retail locations and from on-line suppliers.
Note: Other AYL models with varying specifications are also available. PHILIPS CPAP WORLD-WIDE RECALL

PHILIPS CPAP RECALL ~ A Major Recall That Could Affect Your Life, Health And Well Being…. (Please note that Google’s BlogSpot, the provider we use to publish this monthly column, has changed the allowable format style. So, if the column’s format looks a bit strange it’s due to Google and BlogSpot, not THE GADGETEER.) BOB SKIDMORE CORRESPONDENT © 2021 BOB SKIDMORE ALL RIGHTS RESERVED On June 14, 2021, Philips announced that it has received some complaints of possible patient impact due to foam degradation. There have not been any reports of death or patient impact related to chemical emissions. Philips issued a recall notification to mitigate potential health risks related to the sound abatement foam component material used in certain sleep and respiratory care devices. This recall covers most such Philips devices manufactured prior to April 26, 2021, and includes the first-generation DreamStation Go, ASV, ST, AVAPS, SystemOne AVS4, C-Series ASV, C-Series S/T and ACAPS, OmniLab Advanced+, SystemOne (Q-Series). Dorma 400 & 500, RENstar SE Auto, product family. (Trilogy 100 & 200, GarbinPlus, Aeris, LifeVent, BiPap V30/A30/A40 Series Device Models.) (Note: The recently introduced DreamStation 2 is not affected.) The problem that could occur is that the sound abatement foam component material used to minimize the sound produced by these devices may degrade into particles which may enter the device’s air pathway and be ingested, or inhaled by the user, and the foam may off-gas certain chemicals. The foam degradation may be exacerbated by use of unapproved cleaning methods, such as Ozone. High heat and humidity environments may also contribute to foam degradation. (A side note here is that I believe they are referring to the use of Ozone cleaning devices that actually interface with the machine itself and not with the hose, mask or water container only that are cleaned when these items are placed in a special unattached bag, and not part of the machine itself.) The potential risks of particulate exposure include headache, irritation, inflammation, respiratory issues, and possible toxic and carcinogenic effects. The potential risks of chemical exposure due to off-gassing include headache, irritation, hypersensitivity, nausea/vomiting, and possible toxic and carcinogenic effects. Therefore, Philips has decided to voluntarily issue a recall notification to inform patients, users and customers of potential impacts on patient health and clinical use related to this issue, as well as information on actions to be taken. This recall needs to be taken very seriously. These devices are used for sleep apnea applications. They’re also used for breathing applications when the user is in a horizontal position and must have high pressure breathing assistance. The latter application cannot be ceased, while the sleep apnea use, under doctor’s guidance, possibly could. The reason I’m highlighting this is that thousands upon thousands of users are affected by this ceasing of use and recall. There are only two main manufacturers of such equipment, so repair, or replacement will be a long-term, monumental process. If this recall applies to you, a family member, or friend, you would be well advised to contact Philips at: 1.877.907.7508 www.philips.com/src-update. When completing the recall registration form you will be asked to check and list the serial number located on one or more labels on the bottom of most devices. If one serial number does not match the recall serial numbers shown on their list, try the other if there is one. You should follow up by contacting your local servicer/provider with whom you obtained this equipment, and your pulmonologist doctor who prescribed this equipment’s use in the first place. Discontinue use of your device and work with your physician, or Durable Medical Equipment (DME) provider to determine the most appropriate options for continued treatment. To continue use of your device due to lack of alternatives, consult with your physician to determine if the benefit of continuing therapy with your device outweighs the risks. As part of the program, the first-generation DreamStation product families will be modified with a different sound abatement foam and shipped upon receipt of the required regulatory clearances. Philips recently launched the next-generation CPAP platform, DreamStation 2, is not affected by the issue. To support the program, Philips is increasing the production of its DreamStation 2 CPAP devices, which are available in the U.S. and selected countries in Europe. Your actions and response regarding the information in this article should be solely based on your follow up with the manufacturer, equipment provider and your doctor, and based on their specific instructions related to your personal situation, requirements and needs. 3 HANDY APPLE MAC KEYBOARD SHORTCUTS

APPLE MAC KEYBOARD SHORTCUTS ~ 3 Tips That Are Useful When Creating Documents (Please note that Google’s BlogSpot, the provider we use to publish this monthly column, has changed the allowable format style. So, if the column’s format looks a bit strange it’s due to Google and BlogSpot, not THE GADGETEER.) BOB SKIDMORE CORRESPONDENT © 2021 BOB SKIDMORE ALL RIGHTS RESERVED How often have you said “I wish I could easily make a screen shot of the entire screen, or a selectable portion of it, so I can have a record, or insert it in a document”? A screenshot is a photograph in the PNG format. It can easily be converted to a JPEG by opening it up, selecting EXPORT under the file menu and then selecting JPEG followed by DESKTOP, its final destination. How about an easy way to access symbols and emojis while you’re creating an email, or preparing a WORD document? Well here are some tips on achieving those goals on your Macintosh computer’s keyboard. To make a screen shot of the entire desktop on your computer’s display simply depress simultaneously the SHIFT, COMMAND and NUMBER 3 keys on the MAC keyboard. This will create a full-screen snapshot of the entire screen/desktop. If you would prefer to create a snapshot of a selected portion of the material you desire, simply depress simultaneously the SHIFT, COMMAND and NUMBER 4 keys on your MAC keyboard. You’ll notice that upon releasing the keys, your cursor now displays a crosshair symbol. Now move the mouse while depressing the left key until you have created the size and position of the snapshot that’s desired. Upon releasing the mouse’s key your snapshot is made and placed on the desktop. Screenshots are automatically labeled as such and thus positioned in the alphabetical order of the S’s, as a file. If you desire an easy way to access symbols and special characters, as well as emojis, simultaneously depress COMMAND and the NUMBER 3 keys and wait for a small popup adjustable screen to appear. Clicking on the desire symbol, character, or emoji will place it in your document exactly where your cursor was last displayed. Ok, how do you remember all this? Purchase a package of AVERY # 5795 Color Coding Labels available at Amazon, or at most office supply stores. These are labels that are the size of dots in the colors of green, yellow, blue and red. They’re small enough to be placed on your MAC’s keyboard to aid you in knowing what keys need to be depressed (see photo at top of page). Adding a small paper, or DYMO label to your keyboard, or display’s frame, would indicate which color represents what action is to take place and help you achieve the desired end result. I selected RED for IEMOJ, BLUE for ENTIRE SCREEN SHOT, and GREEN for SELECTABLE SCREEN SHOTS. You may wish to place this label that indicates what functions the colored keys will perform, on your keyboard, or computer’s display. Enjoy!

APPLE WATCH dummies 4th Edition - Series 6

APPLE WATCH dummies 4th Edition The Missing “How To Book” for Series 6 (Please note that if the layout of this column looks a bit strange it is due to Google, the new publisher of Blogspot. Since Google’s recent purchase of Blogspot they have made several questionable changes that are beyond the control of THE GADGETEER) The Missing Handbook For Apple Watch Owners…. BOB SKIDMORE ALL RIGHTS RESERVED – CORRESPONDENT © 2021 The July 2019 column of THE GADGETEER featured Marc Saltzman’s APPLE WATCH FOR DUMMIES, 3rd Edition book geared to the Apple Watch Series 5. https://bit.ly/3d7q20V Recently, Apple introduced the Series 6 watch with many additional features and capabilities. Marc has now published an updated edition of this Dummies book to include these many changes and additional features. As is often the case manufacturers like Apple neglect to include adequate instructions to aid us in gaining the maximum benefits of the product. The word DUMMIES does not mean to demean the reader’s abilities, but rather provide a source for those of us not necessarily in the know. APPLE WATCH FOR DUMMIES, 4th EDITION is written to help us learn about this latest Apple Watch series, how to customize the watch to your personal requirements and discover key features of the newest watch OS. While the Series 5 watch introduced us to its EKG measurement capability, the Series 6 watch now includes a major benefit in that it now can also measure your oxygen saturation and all this data can be forwarded on to others such as your doctor. These improvements have resulted in saving lives and are often recommended by medical practitioners to their patients. Marc discusses how to do many things including playing audio books and how you can listen to downloadable free dramas and comedies including old time radio shows on your watch. This book is a magnificent resource for getting immediate “how-to” solutions to maximizing the use of all the hidden benefits of the watch. I highly recommend APPLE WATCH FOR DUMMIES, 4th Edition to both the first time user and previous owners of Apple Watches. It can also come in handy even if you have previous models. It truly is the manual that should have been included with your purchase! Lastly, Check with your CPA to see if a script from your doctor might qualify the cost of the watch to become a tax deduction if you have any medical conditions that might warrant such deductions. CES 2021 VIRTUAL ~ A Look At Samsung’s Appliance Innovations (Please note that Google’s BlogSpot, the provider we use to publish this monthly column, has changed the allowable format style. So, if the column’s format looks a bit strange it’s due to Google and BlogSpot, not THE GADGETEER.) BOB SKIDMORE CORRESPONDENT © 2021 BOB SKIDMORE ALL RIGHTS RESERVED This year’s annual Consumer Electronics Show (CES) was not held in the traditional on-site manner, but rather virtually due to COVID-19 in early January. Therefore it was difficult for me to report on the show in my usual mode. Consequently I received numerous reports and press releases of new technology to be released in 2021. With that in mind I’ve opted to zero in on two particular products. Better late then never, so here goes…. I’ve chosen two unique products from Samsung. The JetBot 90 Ai+ that cleans your floors with innovative navigation technology and Samsung’s Series 8800 washer-dryer pair that takes the guesswork out of doing laundry. Both these outstanding products received this year’s CES Innovation Awards and will be introduced in the USA in the first half of 2021.
JetBot 90 Ai+ Vacuum The JetBot 90 Ai+ is the first truly smart robotic vacuum that’s powered by Intel® and incorporates a combination of sensors and Ai-enhanced object recognition technology. A Lidar sensor, much like that used in self-driving cars, detects distance and tracks location for exacting its movement. A 3D sensor recognizes the difference between objects such as a toy, or a leg chair. It can even detect small objects on the floor and recognizes a room’s shape to aid in the navigation process thus seeking the most efficient route. Best of all it can detect when your pet has made a mess, avoid it and send you a notification so you’ll know to clean it up. The JetBot 90 Ai+ then uses this information to clean closely around items on the floor maintaining a safe distance from fragile objects and can also automatically lower itself under furniture. As it cleans the floor it maximizes the suction power to trap dust from the air and dirt from the floor. The self-cleaning brush picks up dust from hard floors and can reach into tight crevices. When the cleaning process is completed it automatically heads back to its base that also serves as a disposal system. It now empties the collected debris into a bag that you replace every two, or three months. The JetBot may also be operated via your Smartphone when the Samsung SmartThings app is installed. This feature allows you to control the vacuum process from anywhere. And if that’s not enough you can connect up with its onboard camera to monitor your home and your pets while you’re away.
Samsung WF8800A Series Washer The Samsung washer/dryer series 8800 with Smart Dial Technology learns your preferred cycles and settings, and then prioritizes them for quick access in a simplified, easy-to-use centrally located control panel. It also suggests specific cycles based on intelligent learning of past cycles run on particular days of the week, or at specific times. Its powerful OptoWash feature detects the laundry load’s weight and uses a Turbidity Sensor to determine the ideal amount of water vs detergent to use in the cycle. It also computes how long to wash clothing thus ensuring that your clothes come out the cleanest possible. Using a stacked washer/dryer is made easy with Samsung’s MultiControl feature. This allows you to fully operate both the washer and dryer from one centralized panel on the washer thus keeping all controls within easy reach. You can also use the previously discussed SmartThings app to receive “end of cycle” alerts, remotely start/stop your wash, schedule cycles, and much more from your Smartphone. The DV8800A companion dryer automatically optimizes its cycle too, so you no longer have to check to see if your clothes are dry at the end of the cycle and perhaps have to calculate how much time you have to add, because this dryer does that too. When using the super speed drying cycle, your clothes can be dry in as little as thirty minutes. Without a doubt these Samsung household appliances set the new standard for household appliances for many years to come. By the looks of it I hope a comprehensive operational tutorial video is made available and your local service technician is up to speed. Lol!!! FEILIFAN CABLE CLIPS ~ Cable Mounting, or Simply Multiple Cable Organization…. (Please note that Google’s BlogSpot, the provider we use to publish this monthly column, has changed the allowable format style. So, if the column’s format looks a bit strange it’s due to Google and BlogSpot, not THE GADGETEER.) BOB SKIDMORE CORRESPONDENT © 2021 BOB SKIDMORE ALL RIGHTS RESERVED Several issues back I did a column featuring the STAGEEK CABLE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM. https://bit.ly/3p3xVIG This system lends itself well for hiding short as well as long cable runs while accommodating a number of multiple cables. But what do you do when you have only one cable to extend on a wall, or you simply want to tidy up a spider web of hookup cables that connect to your computer, or similar electronic gadgets? FEILIFAN CABLE CLIPS has a quick and simple solution. Available in two gauge diameter sizes, these self-stick clips attach to various surfaces with the supplied double-sided self-stick tape. Since no screws are needed it’s easy to attach and remove the clips while never leaving unsightly traces of their removal. The FEILIFAN CABLE CLIPS are available in black, white and clear as well as two different gauge sizes that should accommodate most cable sizes. Cables are inserted in an over/under clip fashion that makes for quick and easy cable installation and removal. I’ve used them for 30+-foot Cat5 cable runs in hard to reach places such as wall/ceiling joints. An easy, inexpensive solution to what could be a difficult problem solver. A SIMPLE GUIDE TO OVER-THE-AIR TV

CUTTING THE CABLE CORD ~ A Simple Guide To Over-The-Air FREE TV (Please note that Google’s BlogSpot, the provider we use to publish this monthly column, has changed the allowable format style. So, if the column’s format looks a bit strange it’s due to Google and BlogSpot, not THE GADGETEER.) BOB SKIDMORE CORRESPONDENT © 2021 BOB SKIDMORE ALL RIGHTS RESERVED Have you wanted to drop your cable provider for some alternative to the traditional cable TV service? Perhaps it’s a desire you’ve had, but don’t quite know where to begin, or even what’s available much less the cost savings and how to understand it all? These days cable costs have skyrocketed since the inception of early cable TV, plus all the hidden charges can kill your budget. Andrea Polk is a former criminologist turned freelance writer, housewife and mother. She’s not a techie by any means, but just simply someone who decided to explore the options for providing broadcast television at an affordable price for her family. After much research she discovered many options that are either free, or available at a low subscription, cancelable cost. This persistent research provided her the knowledge to author the book, “SIMPLE GUIDE TO OVER-THE-AIR FREE TV”. This book is written in easy to understand, layman’s terms. Andrea takes you through her pros and cons and the steps she personally experienced to aid her in making it happen. It’s broken into fifteen chapters that include subjects like how to make the cut, explanations of technical terms in layman’s language, digital and over-the-air antennas (OTA) and easy steps to make it all happen. An explanation of Analog and digital broadcasting is explained as well. As she points out some stations transmit different programming on several different digital channels they transmit. An example would be 2.2, 2.3, 2.4 and so on, all from the same station. A bit more explanation for the reader would have been helpful on this topic, as few people understand the concept. She explains how to obtain broadcast services like ABC, NBC, CBS, PBS and independent broadcast stations for free. She also includes an extensive list of low-cost subscription apps and services that provide specific types of programming that can easily be received on a subscription basis with an add-on device such as Roku. This information is most valuable in that she includes the type of programing they provide and typical associated costs you could expect plus how to become a subscriber and what equipment you may need to make it all happen. One does have to consider that this book was originally copyrighted in 2014 and updated in 2019, so the fees and providers that she mentions may have slightly changed plus even more services may have become available. Also included is a section on international TV programming, something that normally could be difficult to find. “SIMPLE GUIDE TO OVER-THE-AIR FREE TV”, is an easy to read and understand step-by-step book that easily guides you to cutting the cable cord. You’ll want to keep this one handy, as it’ll become your reference for many years to come! CLCKR STAND & GRIP CASE COMBO

CLCKR STAND & GRIP CASE ~ For iPhone PRO 11 & 12 Users…. © 2021 BOB SKIDMORE ALL RIGHTS RESERVED BOB SKIDMORE CORRESPONDENT (Please note that Google’s BlogSpot, the provider we use to publish this monthly column, has changed the allowable format style. So, if the column’s format looks a bit strange it’s due to Google and BlogSpot, not THE GADGETEER.) In a previous column we featured CLCKR’s universal Phone grip and stand, a very useful accessory easily attachable to most smartphones. https://bit.ly/3epinKD Now CLCKR has introduced the CLCKR STAND & GRIP CASE for the iPhone 12 PRO. We tested a case specifically marketed for the iPhone PRO 12, 6.1” model, but found this model also nicely accommodated the 11 PRO version as well. I noted a slight, but tolerable up/down slippage of the inserted phone. The CLCKR STAND & GRIP CASE includes both the collapsible stand and grip features that are all built in to a fabric type of material. It prevents dropping your phone and fatigued fingers in constant use situations. This style case also offers some protection to the phones housing while still allowing access to the side buttons, lower mic, speakers and the lightning connector. Obviously, it can’t prevent the glass from breaking since it has no protective covering over it. Perhaps the best feature is the ease of positioning the phone on a surface for landscape, or portrait photography as well as making FaceTime, SKYPE and ZOOM calls. It may take a little usage of the grip to get it to position itself without it wanting to return back to its collapsed position. A visit to CLCKR’S web site will reveal various models, sizes and versions of this useful accessory. Considering the low cost it should be an easy decision and a worthwhile addition to your iPhone accessories and picture taking fun. MSRP: $34.99 GADGETEER’s RATING: ★★★★★ For more information go to: https://www.clckr.com/us/clckr-case Available at manufacturer’s web site above.
