I’m sure you’ve heard lots about a device called Apple TV? No, it’s not a television flat screen, but rather an add-on box that plugs into a spare HDMI port of your flat screen. It’s much like Roku, Firestick and Android TV, but much more advanced. It comes with some preloaded apps and has the capability of adding many additional apps. All these apps generally are not selectable on your flat screen, or DVR, so Apple TV allows you to secure programming not normally available by broadcast television with these apps. Apple TV was first introduced in 2006 and released in early 2007, but since that time many features have been added including the possibility of adding to the app selection. Apple has also added Apple TV+, its own programming subscription service that offers original, made for Apple, programming. Look for the Apple TV App to be added to some new flat screen models in the near future.
As I mentioned in my subtitle, APPLE TV 4K/HD USER GUIDE, is truly the manual that should have been included with your purchase of the Apple TV device. As is quite common these days most electronic gadgets don’t include much in the way of written instructions, but expect the user to already have the operational skills to use them. Such is the case with Apple TV.
APPLE TV 4K/HD USER GUIDE, is a book that’s laid out in sectional topics as opposed to chapters. If there’s a question you have it relies on the reader to see if it’s listed in the index that show pages and then directs you to one of those 130 pages. Typical topics include setting up various functions, adding apps, linking most flat screen remote functions to Apple’s remote and how to use the unusual Apple TV remote control. I say “unusual” because most functions on Apple’s remote require sliding your finger on what’s commonly thought of as a discrete touch pad. Incidentally this remote is a very poor design on Apple’s part. I’ll be reviewing a SALT alternative remote in a future column that runs circles around Apple’s. This book is certainly filled with tons of valuable, good operational information even though the numerous grammar and spelling errors are surprising and do stand out.

PYLE BLUETOOTH WIRELESS SPEAKER
PYLE BLUETOOTH® SPEAKER ~ Wireless 150 Watt Audio System….
© 2020 BOB SKIDMORE ALL RIGHTS RESERVED
BOB SKIDMORE
CORRESPONDENT
The PYLE PBMSQG9 WIRELESS PORTABLE BLUETOOTH® SPEAKER SYSTEM, is a 150 watt audio sound system with stereo speakers capable of 60db s/n and a frequency response of 100-16Khz that serves many purposes. It includes capabilities such as an FM radio with auto-tuning, a USB Flash Drive reader along with a Micro SD Memory Card reader, both for playing your MP3 prerecorded tunes, a Bluetooth® streaming receiver and an auxiliary audio 3.5mm input jack. All this is packed in a small twin-speaker case measuring 11.2 x 4.5 x 4.7 inches and including a rechargeable battery. The battery uses a standard USB wall charger, or computer’s USB port for charging with its supplied cable.
(TIP: Do not operate while the speaker system is connected to the USB wall charger, or a USB computer port. The system is not designed to operate from the USB cable. While the system will function this way it will diminish the life of the battery. This, by the way, holds true for many other electronic items that require charging i.e. shavers, headsets, etc. Charging takes 3-5 hours. When charging is complete the red charging indicator will extinguish. The unit should not be left in the charging mode for longer periods of time even though you are not charging, or using it.)
Most of the features serve obvious uses, but the auxiliary 3.5mm input jack can be very handy. If you live in a condo, apartment complex, or just a homeowner who participates in small gatherings, the need for using a microphone with a small amplifier can be handy. Now I did mention that this amplified speaker system includes an “AUX” input. Such inputs do not support typical Low-Z microphones. So to make this work you will need to acquire a microphone preamplifier such as the Sound Devices single channel MP-1, or a pre-owned (no longer manufactured) Shure FP11, both commonly found on EBAY. They are easily connected with commonly available audio cables.
Prices on these external battery powered devices will vary from $300 (Sound Devices ~ new) to $45 (Shure ~ pre-owned).
I found the sound quality of the PYLE PBMSQG9 to be exceptional. Higher sound output models with much more wattage are also available. However for small gatherings the 150watt model is just fine. My only negative is the FM Auto-tuner, It can be very difficult to locate/lock into a station and/or returning to that station once you’ve changed input modes and want to return to the station. The Bluetooth® receiver works very well in receiving a signal up to 30’ away, but is limited to working with streaming devices only.
MSRP: $40.00
GADGETEER’s RATING: ★★★★ (Based on poor FM Tuning)

BAVIN ~ PC558 World-Wide Power Block
BAVIN ~ PC558 World-Wide Power Block

Electrical strips and USB charging stations are quite common. What’s not common is a power block that does all of this and interfaces with around-the-World electrical voltages and sockets.
The BAVIN PC588 5.4 amp power block is a unique power system that provides 3 AC surge protected power outlets and 6 USB charging ports. Included in this layout is an on/off power switch.
Each of the 3 AC power outlets are configured to accept most electrical power plugs, male or cable end, from around the World (US/UK/AU/EU
WORLD-WIDE OUTLET CHART
No need for individual plug adapters to mate with your various appliances. In addition, six smart fast charging (3.4 amp) USB ports in two groups of three, identify charging current required by electronic devices. A five-foot power cord with a US plug is hard wired into the unit. Unfortunately, you will need a plug adapter that matches the outlet in the country where being used. Please note, this unit does not convert voltages, it simply provides plug adaptation!
I found the BAVIN POWER BLOCK PC588 to be most convenient and practical, especially its compact size of 6.10” L x 3.94” W x 1.2” D and 12.2 ounces.

Wireless Sport Style Ear Buds by ATHENS
ATHENS SPORT IP67 ~
Wireless Sport Style Ear Buds….
©
2020 BOB SKIDMORE ALL RIGHTS RESERVED
BOB SKIDMORE
CORRESPONDENT
In today’s gadget world of communication and
entertainment devices, we are going to look at a better way to enjoy using
them. In this column we’ll discuss earpieces that provide both stereo sound to
our ears and a microphone for smartphone calling.
The ATHENS
“True Wireless” SPORT is just such a device. It comes with a compact storage
case that not only stores the enhanced noise canceling ear buds, but also
serves as a charger and reserve battery supply. Mounted on the side are four illuminated
charge/charging indicators. The ATHENS
SPORT earpieces retain 8 hours of playtime before quickly recharging from
the case’s built-in power reserve. This reserve provides three additional charging
cycles without being plugged into a, not supplied, standard USB power source.
This feature enables the unit to be on-the-go for up to 32 hours before a full system
charge is required. Charging time about one hour. Other features include
Bluetooth 5.0, a built-in mic for use with your smartphone with a waterproof
IP67 specification. The IP67 code means that the ear buds can be dropped into a
body of water up to a meter deep for half an hour. They are also dust resistant. Works well in the shower and heavy rain!
The ATHENS
SPORT is compatible with IOS, Android, SIRI and Google Now. Pairing works
the same as any other Bluetooth device, and once paired is always at the ready
unless you turn off your devices Bluetooth function in settings. The SPORTS’ controls for on, off, play,
pause, volume adjust, track advancement, call answering, and disconnect as well
as SIRI are all activated on the side of each airbus’s logo insignia. Voice
control calling assistance is also possible and a feature generally not found
in similar products. Comes with three pairs of GoFits to adapt to any ear size.
Midnight black is the only color offered.
I found the ATHENS
SPORT ear buds system to work well. It’s size and well thought out features
offer much for our active lifestyles. The fidelity is remarkable considering
how compact it is. As with any new device you acquire you’ll need a little bit
of time to become acclimated to its operation, but you’ll soon appreciate the
Swedish thought and design created by well respected European audio engineer
Axel Grell.

CLICKR Universal Phone Grip
CLCKR ~ Universal Phone Grip

SmartPhones are typically
designed to fit in the palm of your hand. That works well when you’re simply
answering, or making a phone call. However, today’s SmartPhone devices have
evolved into so much more than a “phone” device. We use them for streaming,
viewing videos, video chats, speakerphone conversations, selfies and so much
more. So, the ability to hold your SmartPhone steady, and for longer periods of
time, can become challenging.
The CLCKR “S”, for small, 34290 Universal Phone Grip & Stand may be the inexpensive SmartPhone problem
solver you’ve been looking for. This handy little gem prevents phone dropping
and fatigued hands. Thin and stylish it easily attaches to most phones since it
uses a 3M adhesive that leaves no residue should you desire to remove it. When
affixed, wireless magnetic charging is still possible. You can handhold your SmartPhone
by simply slipping your fingers into the grip’s strap, or use the straps
pullout feature to place it in a portrait or landscape position on almost any
surface.
(TIP: The CLCKR S 34290 fits most
current models of SmartPhones. It does not fit most cases or battery pack style
cases.)
The grip is available in
several different colors and two sizes as well as a case model that also
incorporates the grip feature. The larger model is designed for iPads and
similar devices. Like most heavy use items the durability will be determined by
the use you give it. Being an inexpensive accessory it’s easily replaced if
tattered or worn.
MSRP: $7.99 - $14.99 ~ based on
size model
