It’s been said that CES, the Consumer Electronics Show, may be on the decline with a questionable future. Well, you certainly would not know it based on its all time record-breaking attendance of 153.000+ attendees. In fact, it almost looked like the Detroit Auto Show with additional exhibits from Ford, Mercedes and KIA, a company that opted to skip Detroit and put all its efforts into CES.

Personally, I think Ford stole the show with the introduction of the Fusion Energi plug-in hybrid that’s expected to get more than 100 MPGe, based on averaging the combination of gas, hybrid, and plug-in electric energy sources. In addition, Ford has incorporated “SYNC with MyFord Touch®” that allows access of important features via touch controls and voice commands. Further more, expanded production will soon commence at its plant in Flat Rock, MI making this an all-American car. Guesstimated price $22,000. Kudos to Ford for this most innovative and affordable approach and for keeping it in America! ford.com/cars/fusion/2013/

There were no major innovations. LG showed some pricy, razor thin flat screens incorporating black as an additional primary color, while other manufacturers came pretty close size wise. Samsung demonstrated their line of Smart TV’s that incorporate features such as SKYPE enhancing the visual communications experience. Also interesting was that Polaroid was displaying and actively marketing all lengths of VHS tape, a product that has long since seen better days.

One might think a scanner is a scanner, after all other than dpi ranges (dots per inch quality specs), what else could they possibly do? Along comes the NEATDESK, available in both Intel MAC and PC versions, a scanner that thinks for itself. Not only is the hardware unique, but the software is outstanding.

The NEATDESK PDF scanner is an automatic multi-voltage desktop unit that looks and acts like much higher priced scanners found in hospitals and doctor’s offices. It has the ability of scanning 15 documents as assembled, or by removing the paper guide, a very easy task, increasing the capacity to 50 single pages or 100 double-sided. Now that may sound similar to other scanners, but this scanner spits them out faster than you could grab them. It’s reminiscent of Lucille Ball at the candy factory. Yes, it does take a few extra moments for the processor to translate all these pages before making them readable.

(TIP: The speed of your computer’s processor determines how quickly translation will take place. Older computers or lower end models may take quite a bit longer to digest all the data. )

The NEATDESK is not limited to letter sized sheets. The supplied guide plate has two additional partitions allowing for multiple small receipts and business card insertion. This feature works well with the Intelligent Text Recognition technology built-in to the included NeatWorks software that exports these items to a digital filing system you can create in your computer.

(TIP: The business card partition was specifically designed for card stock, however, thin flexible plastic stock may be scanned as long as there is no raised or embossed lettering as found on credit cards. Such cards could damage the precision optical reader.)

Also included is the ability to stack up to 50 single-sided/100 double-sided scans into one document. Typically, such features require the purchase of additional programs designed for the enhancement of the PDF format. Quality settings include B/W document, image and, color.

(TIP: Scanning into the NeatWorks application is set at a maximum of 300 dpi. The scanner itself is capable of higher resolution, however, the software will always capture at 300, which is what gives the best combination of speed and accuracy for OCR (optical character recognition). B/W IMAGE is 8 bits, 256 shades of gray and approximately 6 – 8 times higher in file storage size. B/W text is only two bits and is the smallest file size.)

(TIP: Steps to scan an IMAGE on a MAC and save to various formats such as JPEG: Press SCAN on scanner, then MENU select COLOR or B/W, IMAGE ONLY, Direct to PDF file, Combine or Separate, Single or Double-sided, Remove Blank Pages, Scan, Save As. Once saved on your computer double click on the file and it opens in PREVIEW. Now pull down FILE, select SAVE AS and select the format, ie: JPEG, you wish to have it in.)

To summarize, the NEATDESK scanner does not replace a flatbed model used for graphic and Photoshop type applications. However for routine scans you can’t beat it’s speed, quality and document stack ability. The quality of text, image and color reproductions is outstanding! I’ve tested this unit for 6 months and have done hundreds of transcripts without one single hick-up. There are several brief tutorials on line as well as printed documentation included with the unit. It’s all useful, but too brief. I would like to see a CD or DVD supplied with the unit that goes into much greater step-by-step detail thus enhancing the experience. This is an outstanding value for the money!

The recent introduction of the new iPhone 4s has once again demonstrated the unique features such products offer. Many third-party manufacturers have jumped on the technology bandwagon by offering useful byproducts to enhance the experience. One such product is the PHOTO CUBE printer by VuPoint Solutions.

The PHOTO CUBE, actually in the shape of a cube, is a dye sublimation thermal transfer printer designed to reproduce 300dpi, 4 x 6” color prints. Products like the iPhone/iPad and Android smartphones offer high-resolution built-in cameras, but no direct printer capability, so the PHOTO CUBE is an easy solution.

It’s simple to use, but it does require a free download from the Apple App store. Once you’ve downloaded the app, install the starter ink/paper cartridge that simply slides into the cube. An iPhone, iPod or Android smartphone can now be docked to the standard connector located on top of the printer. If you’re connecting an iPad, simply use the USB cable supplied with your iPad and plug in into the side-mounted USB port. Since there is not a power switch, just plug the power cable into your mains (variable 100 – 240vac) outlet and you’re set to go.

Select the app on your device, then follow the menu options to locate or take the photo of your choice. Prior to printing you have a layout option that allows a full bleed 4 x 6” photo, or 4 or 10 images per sheet. Select the number of copies, up to 4, and press print. Since the cube uses dye sublimation thermal transfer technology the paper will move in and out five times which takes about 55 seconds excluding data processing time.

(TIP: When selecting the multiple, or partitioning feature you may select different photos to be printed on the same sheet. The four-image selection is perfect for making wallet size photos. Since the paper is not perforated for this purpose you will need to make two clean cuts. For precise cuts I would suggest the use of a paper trimmer, which usse a sharp blade as opposed to a paper cutter, or scissors.)

The print quality is outstanding with vivid colors and no focus issues. They are every bit as good as those available at various photo kiosks. The per print cost may be higher than at such places, but the trade-off may be the immediacy of high quality print reproduction. I’ve been writing articles under THE GADGETEER byline for over thirty years. In that time, I’ve seen many entrepreneurs come and go. Steve Jobs, however, was a one-of-a-kind, a designer, marketer, businessman and most of all, a visionary extraordinaire who saw a need before we even knew it was one. It is therefore fitting and proper that I dedicate this month’s column to Steve Jobs who inspired the world and me with his technology.

Since the sixties when America launched the space program many have continued to say, “what a waste of time and money”. Over the past fifty years we’ve reaped the benefits of this challenge with advances in many areas of our daily lives, not to mention the careers that were created from numerous spin-offs.

Steve Jobs, the visionary, carried the torch. His technological designs opened the doors for others to become motivated and create many of the advanced gadgetry that we’ve all become accustomed to enjoy in our daily lives. He was never afraid of competition. He thrived on it! To this end Steve was not satisfied to be the sole visionary at Apple, but rather, to create an atmosphere to encourage inquiring minds to think out-of-the box.

He quietly established an executive training program known as Apple University at his company. His goal was to get Apple executives to think like him. This foresight on his part will keep Apple a leader in the technology we all have come to expect, long after his departure. Steve may be gone in mind, but he will always be with us in spirit.

He was once asked about how much market research went into the iPad, Steve said "None. It's not the customers' jobs to know what they want." But while Apple may not have done any market research, it did plenty of advertising. They produced some of the most creative ads. Who can forget the “I’m a PC and I’m a MAC” campaign, or the third-quarter of the 1984 Super Bowl ad that started it all? His creativity was not limited to products.

Sony Pictures is so impressed with his life and contributions that they plan to produce a film of his life story. It’s a pity that Steve’s not here to enjoy all the well deserved kudos.

Nineteen-year-old Jonathan Mal, a Hong Kong design student, came up with the creative design above incorporating Steve Jobs’ silhouette into the existing bite of the Apple logo. What a tribute befitting the cofounder of Apple. Let’s hope it becomes Apple’s new symbol. You may not be an Apple user, but one thing’s certain, Steve’s affected all our lives in some way forever and that’s something reflected in this quote: “To stand in the shadows is to be seen, To stand full-square in the Sun is to be judged”, author unknown.

This is probably one of the most useful accessories you could add to your laptop. Although, not limited to laptops, and compatible with MAC’S and PC’s (Windows 2000™ - Windows 7™, Mac® 10.3 – 10.7, Linux, USB 1.1 – 2 interface), the SUPER USB Wi-Fi Antenna 3 offers an alternative to the short-range antenna supplied with your computer. Perfect for all types of travel applications!

(TIP: Some versions of MAC 10.6 & 10.7 may require a slightly different install. Refer to the manufacture’s web site for a special download.)

The antenna comes with software, custom cable and various mounting options. The software provides a driver for PC use and a wireless utility for either platform. This utility is used in conjunction with your network selection option found in your applications folder.

Once you install the software you are ready to plug in the antenna. A mini USB connector plugs into the antenna base. The other end of this cable offers two standard USB plugs, with one cable being thicker than the other. If you have two USB ports available, plugging in both connectors offers maximum reception possibilities since more power is applied to the antenna.

(TIP: U. S. government regulations restrict the amount of power emanating from a USB port. European connections are much less restrictive resulting in even more power being applied thus further increasing the range. Range can be up to one-mile, or even further under European conditions.)

If only one USB connection is used, select the thicker cabled one for insertion. Now, mount the antenna. I tested this device in a fourth floor condo with plenty of windows, so the suction cup option was my best choice. If, however, you were outdoors you would want to use the supplied cable ties around a stake or pole. The antenna has a 360° pickup pattern, perfect for outdoors, but somewhat restrictive indoors.

(TIP: The antenna receives encrypted and open signals. Naturally, only the open selections will be of any use to you unless you have the required password. The use of open, or unlocked, signals may only be used if the provider of such signals authorizes their FREE use. The fact that no password is required does not automatically mean you have permission to use it. Many public locations such as restaurants, pubs, etc., do authorize FREE use.)

As previously mentioned, my tests were conducted on the fourth level of a concrete building using a MacBook laptop with the antenna affixed with suction cups to the glass. Since no obstructions were present, I had the benefit of a 180° pickup pattern. Here are the results: Built-in Apple antenna – 10 channels; One USB plugged in (thicker cable end) – 37 channels; Two USB’s plugged in – 41 channels. I’m told it’s not unusual to see 100 or more channels, conditions permitting.

As noted, the results were outstanding. The software installation was easy. While there is lots of supporting technical documentation included, which looks intimidating and you probably won’t need, the computer completed the install automatically after a few moments. Engaging the antenna simply requires you to select it from a list of wi-fi sources in your computer and opening the wireless utility you just installed. This utility will show you all the channels being received and you simply click on any OPEN one that you feel you’re authorized to use. The rest is magic!

(TIP: Avoid the use of USB hubs as they may not supply adequate power.)

The built-in sound system in most laptops, handheld devices and some digital video cameras leaves much to be desired. The problem is the amplification factor is insufficient in combating ambient sounds. Yes, headsets are one solution, but they limit the ability of sharing sound tracks with others in the room.

When selecting external speakers several factors need to be considered. Size, portability and amplification at a reasonable price are the main features to consider. I tested units by Cyber Acoustics and WoWee One.

The Cyber Acoustics CA-2988 is a USB-powered stereo system with 2“ full range drivers. A magnetic clamp design locks the two speakers together for storage in the supplied cloth case. An audio cable plugs in to your 3.5mm headphone jack while a USB cable inserts into your USB 2.0 port and provides power to the speakers. The speaker connectors plug into the bottom rear of each unit and complete the base mount allowing them to be positioned upright. Volume level control is accomplished by your devices volume control. The amplification factor is about 2.5 times the sound level of your internal speaker’s volume and provides for a more then adequate comfortable sound reproduction.

(TIP: The magnetic clamp design is great for keeping the units in place while transporting, however care should be taken to avoid close proximity contact with magnetic storage devices or pre-recorded tapes as full or partial erasure could take place.)

The WoWee One Classic is a compact unit that claims as much as 3 octaves of frequency response below the low-end base cut-off of traditional units. It uses a 20-hour, rechargeable internal battery power supply and an audio cable plugged into your 3.5mm headphone jack. The battery may be charged with a supplied USB cable or an external charger. Once again, volume adjustments are made with your devices volume control. While supplied with stereo plugs, there is no speaker separation since this is a single self-contained unit resulting in monaural reproduction. On the plus side, this speaker may be placed in the users pocket when used with iPod, iPad and various Smartphones. The amplification factor is 2.5 to 3 with a very discernable base response.

(TIP: Maximum base response is achieved when the unit is placed on a hard surface, not in your pocket.)

If you simply want louder audio with normal frequency response and portability the Cyber Acoustics CA-2988 is a great solution at a good price. If, on the other hand, you want music quality sound with a wide frequency response with emphasis on base response, and stereo separation is not a concern, the WoWee One Classic is worth considering. I should notice that at high volume levels some distortion may be noted, but then some music formats purposely create distortion as an effect. Both units are available on-line and at retail.

New technology is always great, but with it comes an entire new set of problems and the need for inexpensive solutions. Many of Today’s Blu-Ray players, mini digital video cameras and television display devices lack analogue connectivity. Interfacing such signals is near impossible unless some form of an analogue conversion is available. Such external solutions are typically very expensive and surpass the cost of the new HDMI device. So, let’s say you wish to view HD programming on your non-HD TV display, or wish to copy a Blu-Ray disc to DVD, or transfer recorded HD material from your mini camera to an analogue editing program on a stand-alone editor or MAC/PC. What’s a practical solution?

RAM Electronics Industries offers a problem solver with the model V3081 HDMI to composite/S-Video converter. This compact box offers an HDMI connection that is selectable to convert to either a composite video or S-video jack that may be switched between PAL or NTSC TV standards. It includes stereo audio jacks as well.

The operation is simple. Select PAL or NTSC operation, plug the HDMI cable into the converter, select the output desired and match up with the appropriate video and audio cables.

(TIP: You need to complete these steps and power up the converter prior to powering the source or other device. Failure to select the proper TV standard, PAL or NTSC, will result in a black & white, unstable image. Power everything down, make the proper selection, and reboot as previously discussed)

I tested the converter using various monitors, a Casablanca editing system, a Kodak digital camera and video inputs of a computer’s video board. The results were favorable considering the low cost of the converter. Since HD signals typically use a 16:9 format, a squeeze and stretched image were somewhat noticeable. It would be nice if a letterbox switch selection were available to compensate for this effect. Color, noise and resolution were very good when compared to the original signal. A loop-thru capability is missing which means repatching is necessary for returning to non-converted use.

Pocket-sized digital video cameras have become a great documentation and communications tool for both the amateur and professional alike. At the recent CES Show, Kodak introduced the PlaySport ZX5, a second-generation HD mini digital camcorder that’s waterproof to 10’ for up to 2 hours, shockproof to 5’ on to plywood, and dustproof, a successful test that I personally experienced during a recent Texas sandstorm.

There are many mini HD video cameras, but this one is truly feature packed. Most impressive is the ability to utilize up to a 32 gb removable memory card, typically not found on competitive models, giving you the capability to record up to 10 hours of HD, or thousands of 5.3 mega pixel stills.

(TIP: Memory card storage is the preferred storage medium as the internal storage is very small. Over-sized memory cards that contain large numbers of clips/stills, if damaged, will result in big project losses compared to using several cards minimizing that risk. Also, when you remove a large card, special readers may be required for downloading, something that in-store photo services may not have. Naturally, you can download directly from the PlaySport to your MAC, PC or other editing device.)

The automatic digital image stabilization, necessary correction for mini handheld cameras, is greatly improved. A 5.5mm – 35mm, 4X digital zoom, is typical for such cameras. The underwater capability includes a menu selection for color temperature correction. The light sensitivity, not as low as some others, is very good and the auto-focus has a quick response. A macro menu selection is offered, but results leave a bit to be desired. Capture effects include vivid color, normal color, sepia, B/W, high saturation and a seventies look. Capture modes include 1080p (16:9) 30 fps; 720p (16:9) 60 & 30 fps; WVGA (16:9). ARCSOFT Media Impression software for on-board or PC, not MAC, editing is included. Downloading to the Casablanca Bogart editing system works exceptionally well too. Possible negatives, mono in/out audio and an internal, service replaceable, battery.

The PlaySport has five dedicated operational buttons: power, capture mode, review, delete and share. The share button offers direct connection to your personal email addresses and social networking sites when connected to your computer.

(TIP: Consider the use of a commonly available handgrip to steady this or any other small digital camera. It makes panning and crane shots a snap. The Fat Gecko is a great solution in that it combines a suction action mount with a handgrip/extension. Fantastic, must have, accessory that works with many other cameras under 4 pounds. Some unique, optional accessories are offered. The ones I particularly like are the action mounts, wireless remote, AV cable and floating wrist strap.

(TIP: Dashboard videos are easily recorded with the action mounts. Perfect for production and news applications and fun for the enthusiast, too.)

The PlaySport offers a USB output to your computer. It also can feed the composite input of display or recording devices via the optional AV cable, or HD via HDMI. An on-screen menu allows output selection of either NTSC or Pal TV standards, also a feature not normally found.

The KODAK PlaySport is a rugged, well designed, camera. Weighing in at only 125g and 0.7” thick makes for easy transport. It meets the high standards of the Pro, especially for B roll, as well as the video enthusiast. This is one digital camera that serves many purposes, and does it well.

(TIP: When purchasing an SDHC memory card you should select at least a CLASS 4 or higher. Transcend offers a 32gb CLASS 10, available on line for about $50. The higher the CLASS value, the faster the response time, something very important to video performance on any digital camera.)

At CES 2011, SCHLAGE, a leading U. S. lock manufacturer, introduced an electronic combination lock known as the Link System, which can be controlled by your computer, iPad or iPhone. It’s a step up from their standard keypad series and can be upgraded to control many other security and household devices.

The Link System starter kit is designed to provide remote control locking/unlocking of your door(s) via your iPhone, iPad or computer. In addition, accessories are available allowing viewing of live video from a wireless or wired Schlage network color camera, controlling lighting and adjusting your thermostat with more enhancements in the works. All these features may be programmed to text or email alert you of who’s doing what, where and when in your home. Naturally, manual keypad door access is possible by means of 19 personalized, 4-digit codes for individuals needing regular or temporary access to your home. These codes may even be programmed for weekly specific time frames or one time use and can be reset remotely as well. Future enhancements will include window sensors and a DVR (Digital Video Recorder) from a camera that is motion activated with the video stored for recall on the Schlage server and available, when you’re alerted, for playback on your computer, iPhone or iPad.

Installation, if you have an existing 2 1/8” hole in your door, is relatively easy. If not, cutting this hole may be tricky. While the instructions refer to a web site to guide you thru this process, you’ll soon find that the explanation is missing. If you’re all thumbs, I would suggest hiring a handyman who’s imaginative and has some computer knowledge to complete the installation.

(TIP: To drill the required size hole when a smaller hole already exists, a common issue with doors 10 years or older, you’ll need to fabricate a plug that snugly fits in the existing hole. This will allow a bi-metal hole saw with arbor (Milwaukee # 49-56-9668) to make a perfect cut. Failure to make a perfect cut could prevent the proper alignment thus affecting the final installation/operation resulting in relocating the hole and covering up the original one, or replacing the door. I’m told that second party kits for this purpose are also available.)

Once successfully installed you are ready to program the lock and any accessories you’ve added to the network. These steps are easily explained in the supplied instructions. This system does require a dedicated wireless router, however, a computer need not be powered up to keep the system remotely operational. The locks use self-contained battery power and will work manually during power or Internet outages. Low battery indications are provided on both the lock and web site, as well as text/email alerts. A key is supplied in the event of an all-out power failure.

(TIP: If you use a MAC to complete the programming and setup you will need to use Firefox 3.0. PC users will need Internet Explorer 7.0.)

IPhone/iPad use requires the downloading of a free app. Once installed, you’ll indicate the use of a phone on the initial setup, complete the questions asked, and then be supplied a code to activate the app. When activated, you’ll create a password to be used each time you wish to remotely control the Schlage Link System. The lock receives a signal causing an audible five-second beep and engaging the knob used to lock/unlock the deadbolt. Once the beep stops the knob is once again freewheeling and unable to perform this function.

Schlage charges a monthly or annual fee to remotely operate the network features. Currently the fee is a one size fits all, however, I’m told that a tier rate structure, based on server storage space required, is under consideration. The Schlage Link System is well designed and constructed. It’s perfect for rental property owners, guesthouses and condos where frequent access by non-permanent residents is required. The expansion capabilities not only offer additional peace-of-mind and energy conservation, but also solutions to access control. The important thing is, it works! Quite a feeling to hear the door click after depressing the button on your iPhone. Available at retail and on-line, in deadbolt, lever and non-remote models in various finishes.

(TIP: Consider adding a push plate above your lock to avoid dirt buildup common with long-term use. Instead of installing a metal plate, purchase a magnetic vent cover. Since most front doors have a metal covering, a magnetic vent cover mounts in place with no hardware and is easily cleaned and replaced, if necessary. Available at retail or on-line, in white or use colored self-stick vinyl to match a specific color or pattern.)

Yes, you read it correctly. Audeo, (Auh-day-o), a Swiss company, is offering several models of an earpiece that’s a cross between an earphone and an ear bud. It should be noted that Audeo is a division of Phonak, a leader in high-end hearing aids. Sounds like they know their stuff, no pun intended.

What makes them unique is the ability to customize each earpiece with a filter for the desired sound you enjoy. These filters include the grey that provides stronger mid range tones, the black featuring emphasis on the treble range and the green offering enhanced base response. Depending on the model purchased one set of filters is included and pre-installed. Should you desire to change filters a special tool is included with the accessory filters purchased to allow for easy and quick change-outs. The Perfect Fit series includes some accessories such as silicone ear guides, also available separately to assist in routing the cables around your ear and a set of foam tips that create a snug fit that significantly filters out most ambient noise. All models include small, medium and large silicone ear tips that work exceptionally well too.

I tested the Perfect Base with microphone. The mic is designed with a mini pushbutton that answers/releases calls on your iPhone, Android or other mobile digital device while pausing your music when answering the incoming call. These units typically fit any device with a 1/8” 3.5mm/4-contact stereo jack. All models comply with the strict EU maximum power output (MPO) guidelines guarding against hearing loss caused by excessive volume levels.

The sound quality was exceptionally clear, the ear canal fit was perfect and the general comfort outstanding since these earphones weigh only 0.5 ounces. The reproduction is so good that many recording studios and musicians use them. If you take your music seriously these earphones are for you! Another great NEW PRODUCT at this year’s CES.

Ever had a situation where you needed a copy, but no copier was available, or the need to copy an unusual surface? VuPoint Solutions has a solution that seems to work well and saves paper too.

Recently I tested their MAGIC WAND, PDS-ST410-VP-BX2, a 10.1”x1”x1.2”, 7.5oz, double AA battery-operated, wand shaped device, that scans in both color and B/W, at 300 or 600 dpi. The JPEG images are stored on a microSD/microSDHC card with a supported capacity as high as 32gb. Data can easily be transferred by the supplied USB 2.0 output to your Mac (10.4+) or PC (Windows XP/7/Vista) without the need for a driver. A multi-functional display indicates modes of operation and capacity.

The unique ability of this scanner is to be able to scan many different formats such as documents, photos and tile surfaces. Scanned photos were excellent and colors true when compared to the original. Documents were perfect. This is the ideal scanner for people on the go. A great tool for TV and print journalists, researchers, decorators, lawyers, investigators and the home office, too.

(TIP: Best results are achieved when using a flat surface and an even, constant forward motion.)

Have you ever had the desire, or need to create a web site, but didn’t know how. Furthermore, if you did explore the possibility you soon found out that you needed knowledge in something referred to as HTML, HyperText Markup Language, the basic building blocks, code, of creating a site from the ground up. All this sound too complicated? Well it did to me too, and it is.

Karelia Software, creators of Sandvox, a Mac website building application, may just have the answer. Yes, Sandvox is designed around the Mac OSX operating system, but today so many computers are capable of dual platforms, so that this should no longer be an issue unless you have an antique, in which case it’s time to update yourself. I’ve located many programs that claim ease in developing web sites, but nothing comes close to Sandvox.

I tested version 1.6.8, Pro Edition, and also obtained a DVD tutorial, a definite must, to quickly walk you thru the steps. This DVD, also available as a download, takes you thru a chronological series of steps to complete your site. You can run it along side the program while you’re developing the site and not overlook a step. The menu selection and tools are very similar to those used in iWork™, an Apple™ program. The Pro Edition enables advanced features such as raw HTML pages/pagelets and Google integration for higher website visibility. Simply put, you can insert html script provided by others for things like weather and news headlines, or a PayPal link. If you do understand html you can create customized features of your own in far less time.

In order to properly test Sandvox, I created a web site for a small business I operate in my spare time; www.safetymaxtraining.us From start to finish, creation time was just under four hours. I selected a page design theme from the many included. If you don’t find one that suits you, additional themes are inexpensive and readily available from numerous suppliers on line. I easily created a home page with Weather Channel alerts, a FREE service that adds life to the page. Additional informational pages were just as easy to create requiring no expertise other than your creative abilities. A contact me page was a simple selection and allows for customizing to your informational needs. Adding PayPal as a link was clearly explained. A hit counter for each individual page may be added. Layouts for podcasts and bloggers are also included. Photos, graphics video and audio clips are easily inserted.

(TIP: By making a screen-shot of your theme page, minus content, you can create consistency for things like stationary, fliers and postcards and maintain a professional look throughout all your marketing pieces.)

Once your site is complete you’re only a few clicks away from publishing, providing you have a host. The host is the site that your site is published to and accessed by your audience. These steps are easily explained in the tutorial. Once published, it’s easy to make corrections, delete or add pages and change just about anything you like without loosing your unchanged content, hit counter, links or graphics. All you do is go back to the publishing button and follow the prompts.

(TIP: Be sure that the host you’ve chosen gives you all the log-on information required to publish. Without that you can’t complete the final publishing step.)

Sandvox provides you with tools to assist in gaining high search engine visibility and are inserted as you create the site. Also included in the Pro Edition is Google integration to maximize the visibility of your site, understand who’s visiting it, know where your visitors are coming from, discover what’s bringing them to you and know how long they look at each page. These features are not commonly found in other preformatted creation software.

In preparing for this article I needed a host. After much research I chose justhost.com , located in the UK. They were ranked in first place on a “top-ten” list I read, offer FREE domain name registration, unlimited email accounts and unlimited GB’s of space. If you commit to a four-year contract your monthly cost is only $4.45. They offer both live chat and email support, both of which are excellent, but I prefer the email method as it allows them time to study your question before replying.

Previously I mentioned the use of a theme in collateral material. I located a printer at www.nextdayflyers.com/ that provides doubled-sided, color, glossy 14 PT ultra-thick postcards at $46.00 for 1000. The price, print quality and service are exceptional!

Whether your need is personal, blogging or commercial, Sandvox is the simple way to create professional looking web sites. I can’t emphasize enough how impressed I am with the ease of its use and support. In the months to come they will release version 2.0 along with an accompanying tutorial that I anticipate testing. So…. create, don’t hesitate!

Each year in early January thousands of entrepreneurs, manufacturers, dealers and press descend on Las Vegas for the show of shows in electronic gadgetry known as CES, the Consumer Electronics Show. With some 140,000 attendees and 2700 plus exhibits, “what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas”, does not apply, at least the manufacturers hope not.

(TIP: If you do attend, be sure to bring some good walking shoes. You’ll get a good workout and be thankful you did!)

This show is so big that often times the little guy gets lost in the shuffle, so I will mention a few goodies from these global participants. First, however, I need to mention a couple of show standouts.

Ford Motor Company officially introduced the 2012 Focus Electric. The Focus Electric runs entirely on electricity stored in powerful batteries and can go a distance of about 100 miles before recharging. A unique feature is an app for Smartphones that lets you monitor and schedule the charging status, driving range, charging locations, other than your home, vehicle location and much more. Whirlpool demonstrated the MHW9000X Maxima™ washer and the ME/GD9000X EcoConserve™ dryer. They use up to 82% less water and 86% less electricity. Its PowerWash™ system dispenses 6X HE concentrated detergent. The LCD display prompts the user to dispense the proper amount based on contents, load and stains. A combination of suggested pre-treatment and the on-board computer remove such stains as coffee, peanut butter or jam. Release date is April 2011 at select Sears stores with a price range of $1500 - $2000 depending on capacity and base. Note: Whirlpool and Maytag are one of the same. Probably the biggest presence was in 3D displays by Sony, Panasonic, JVC and LG, some of which were glass-less. The big three also showed 3D camcorders. In my opinion, 3D is still a work in progress. While readily available at a price, pictures are often fuzzy, or blurred and the use of glasses is a nuisance to those already wearing eyewear. The glass-less displays shown at LG were not too bad, but required viewing dead center to see the effect.

Many health related devices and aps were shown which monitor many of your vital signs and make them available to your iPhone. Primpo showed the iSonic cane which detects obstacles, colors and darkness/brightness and informs you thru vibrations at different strengths. Currently not available in the U. S. as they are seeking a U. S. partner/distributor.

Casio showed several new still cameras featuring various imaging correction and enhancement tools such as making a print look like an oil painting. They announced a FREE web site, available in late February, where anyone may go and utilize these tools with their old digital photos not necessarily shot on a Casio camera. http://bit.ly/gS2AEC

UltraTek displayed their new dual sided USB connector. This connector allows the user to plug into any USB port without considering plug orientation and polarity. It’s totally reversible! Available now. http://bit.ly/fqQctf

NiteIze showed some unique reusable rubber twist tie wraps that are very strong, easy to open/close and available in various sizes. They’re also entering the “lace-Lock” business, a simple device that replace the traditional knot used in tying your tennis shoes. http://bit.ly/aLoaJp

3M presented the PocketProjector MP180. This product includes 4GB of built-in memory allowing storage of data files while also allowing access to the internet and other devices by means of wi-fi and Bluetooth technology. Equipped with speakers, 2 hours of battery life, up to an 80” diagonal projected screen size and 32 lumens of brightness, 11.9 oz, SVGA (800x800), 1.3h x 5.9d x 2.5”w, in/out: VGA, composite & component, USB mini, NTSC 480i-480p, PAL 576i-576p, H.264, SD 480i-576i, HD 720p/1080i. Big Stream demonstrated a Bluetooth device that interfaces with iPod, iPhone and iPad, allowing the streaming of video information into your TV’s component input. The streamer plugs in to your i device, streams to a pocket sized receiver which interfaces to your TV. Depending on the video source, picture quality was acceptable. $99.00 http://bit.ly/gD06wK

iDevices introduced the iGrill cooking thermometer. This probe sends cooking data such as temperature, remaining cooking time, etc., to your iPhone via an app. http://bit.ly/gD06wK

iTwin once again showed their Remote File Access USB device that permits accessing your files and folders on another computer. The PC version is now available with a MAC version coming soon. The device can easily be moved from computer-to-computer. $99.00 http://www.itwin.com/

Tiffen demo’ed their Dfx V 2.0 filter software, which permits adding filter effects normally associated with lens filters and special effects to your stills. Over the years I’ve tested numerous cordless phones, but Panasonic’s latest KX-TG series, appears to be a real winner. Here are just a few of the outstanding features:

Dect 6.0 Plus, increases error correction thus improving the phone’s transmission range without interfering with other common wireless devices.

Intelligent Eco Mode, lowers battery consumption when handset is within close proximity of the base unit.

Call Block, allows you to program in numbers from unwanted callers such as telemarketers, bill collectors or just plain nuisance calls. Simply program in the number after the first call and the caller will now receive a busy signal on all future calls until you deprogram. A GREAT feature and well worth the price of the phone itself.

Silent Mode, permits programming to ring only when convenient so as to not disturb sleep, etc.

Talking Caller ID, is another feature that makes this phone priceless. This feature announces who’s calling after the second ring. It can be programmed individually, or for up to six instruments.

Locater button, finds misplaced handsets

Additional features, more common with other brands of cordless phones, include an 18 minute answering machine, handset locator, intercom, up to 4-way conference capability, 50 number directory that may be grouped, speaker phone headset jack and ringer ID for easy identification of favorite callers.

A step up model, KX-TG6583T, features Link-To-Cell, a technology that connects Bluetooth®-enabled cell phones thus allowing you to make and receive calls on the system’s handset from your cellular phone. I did not test this model.

(TIP: Periodically allow the instrument to fully discharge before returning to the charger unit. This will prolong battery life.)

I tested the model KX-TG6545, a five-handset package. All the features worked exceptionally well. Again, the Talking Caller ID and call-block make this cordless phone bundle an outstanding choice. I also like the addition of a headphone jack since when talking with technical support services, etc., you can easily listen/talk hands-free while working out the support issue. Requires an optional headphone/mic such as the KX-TCA60. As I’ve mentioned in other reviews of similar products I would like to see a 75 – 100 number directory, a feature that should not be difficult for the manufacturer to incorporate.

(TIP: This phone does offer a speakerphone feature, however, all speakerphones can present sound issues depending on your proximity to the instrument. Therefore the use of a headphone/mic makes perfect sense for this purpose. Panasonic offers several styles of accessory headphone/mics. To ensure compatibility stick with their accessory model suggestions.)

Additional handsets may be added to existing systems for up to six instruments.

Most of us probably have an attic, or garage full of old family 35mm slides. Even when slides were in vogue they required hauling out the projector, a screen and if you wanted prints your local photo processor had to convert them to a negative format. Typically some quality was lost in the process. So what’s the easiest way to salvage these precious moments? VuPoint Solutions may just have your answer.

In this computer age that we live in scanners are pretty popular. When it comes to scanning 35mm slides, or film strips some flattop scanners offer an optional accessory for making this conversion. The down side is that the attachment may be a bit pricy and large, not storage friendly, and the process tedious. Many attempts at manufacturing a dedicated scanner have failed due to vignetting, the creation of dark, distorted corners in the scan. I’ve tested many such scanners in the past, but have finally found one that works well and is reasonably priced.

VuPoint Solutions offers the model FC-C520-VP-BX2 Digital Film/Slide Scanner. It’s about the size of a quart of ice cream, includes a 2.4” color flip-top LCD screen, two media trays and a multi-voltage AC power adapter. The unit features a 5 megapixel CMOS Sensor providing 10 bits per color channel and has a 32MB built-in flash memory storage capacity while also supporting up to 16GB removable SD cards. The controls allow for selection of 1800 or 3600 dpi, an unusually high scan conversion rate for such moderately priced units, ½ step exposure adjustments from -2EV to +2EV and a color/monochrome button.

(TIP: It’s important to select the monochrome setting whenever scanning B&W media. This eliminates the possible addition of color noise visible as color specs in the finished scan.)

The process is simple! Use either the built-in memory, or insert your own SD card. I prefer the SD card method as it stores many more scans and can easily be transferred to your computer via a card reader. Insert the slides or negative strip into the tray, make any exposure adjustments, or allow the scanner to automatically adjust for brightness and contrast, then press the SCAN button. In a few seconds the scan is complete and you can advance to the next photo.

(TIP: Once you transfer the completed scans to your computer, MAC or PC, you may wish to further enhance, or color correct them with one of the many programs available for this purpose. Arcsoft PhotoImpression 6 software is included for Windows XP & Vista users.)

I found the FC-C520-VP-BX2 to work exceptionally well. Scans are very fast, quality high and the lack of vignetting makes it the perfect tool for converting those old slides and negatives. In addition, a TV output jack is provided so you can view your scans directly on your TV/monitor. (note: video input jack is required. The connecting cable is supplied with the scanner. NTSC/PAL selection)

(TIP: Always clean your slides, or negative strips prior to scanning. This will remove years of dust build up. A lens brush with squeeze plunger is perfect for this and available at most camera stores. The scanner includes a brush for cleaning it.)

Burning media should be an easy task. If you own a MAC such software is included with your computer, so why the need for anything else? In today’s computer world, MAC or PC, there are so many variables and features that it makes sense to install software specific to the task. Roxio has long been a leader in such software solutions including its most recent bundle, TOAST 10 TITANIUM PRO. While this article reviews TOAST 10 TITANIUM PRO, a bundle, you should be aware that the plug-ins making up this package are in most cases individually available for both the PC and MAC.

TOAST 10 TITANIUM PRO is made up of five main programs making it a powerhouse of creative and processing tools. While not the developer of all these programs, Roxio has teamed up with the various manufacturers to offer the user the opportunity to test drive products at a very minimal cost. Many of the programs included are considered “light”, however, more advanced versions and upgrades are available from the software providers. In many cases, the “light” versions will demonstrate the power of the program, but also will more than meet, or exceed the needs of the user.

(TIP: Roxio Toast 10 Titanium Pro, a bundle, is available for the MAC. The PC version, Roxio Creator 2011 PRO, is very similar. Users interested only in a specific application and not a bundle, can purchase the individual programs from the appropriate developer directly.)

Some of what’s included:

Roxio: Normal disc burning software. Extract clips from DVD-Video discs and convert to the format of your choice. Fit-to-DVD™ compression technology fits a 9 GB DVD-Video onto a 4.7 GB disc. Many of us, at one time or another, have had to grind down pills. Perhaps they are too large, or simply, too hard to swallow. Up to now the only way to accomplish this task was to use a hammer, or a manual twist masher found on many pill splitters. In either case these methods leave large clumps and are difficult to operate, especially for seniors with wrist problems.

(TIP: Before crushing any pill, discuss which pills may be crushed with your physician. Remember, this gadget is for powder based pills & tablets only.)

Variant Products, Ltd., has developed the VitaCarry®, an electric pill crusher powered by three AAA batteries. This device, about the size of two stacked cell phones, is small enough to travel with you. Operation is simple. Slide the upper pill compartment lid away from the device, now revealing the crusher’s blades and pill chamber. Place one, or two pills in the chamber making sure that they do not exceed the height of the compartment since the lid needs to slide back over the chamber before it will function. If necessary, reduce the pill size by splitting it. Never use time-release, liquid filled capsules, gel caps, or hard coated pills. Such medications will loose their effectiveness, not to mention the mess and damage that may occur. Now, slide the lid back in place and press the blue power button below the lid. You can observe the pulverization process thru the round window. Once all the powder has dropped thru to the chamber below, press the power button again to stop the crushing cycle. Directly below the pill compartment is a slide-out collection tray now containing the pill powder and ready for use. Pet owners can remove the collection tray and replace it with a flat lid. Sliding this lid open allows the grounded medication to be spread over their food.

(TIP: All removable parts are dishwasher safe. Be sure to place these items in a dishwasher basket designed for small items, and in the top section of the washer for minimum heat exposure.)

I tested the VitaCarry® with several large pills, none of which required reduction in size. In several seconds the desired result was achieved. Cleaning the device, however, is another story. While I had little difficulty, I could see someone with arthritis may. The process requires complete removal of the lid, a plastic trim strip and the cutter module. The cutter module could prove to be the difficult one as it does require a good grip. When reinstalling, care must be taken to match up the small plastic guides with the chamber. Since they are white, the same color as the device, they too, may create a problem for some.

(TIP: Once a pill has been crushed it may be necessary to thoroughly clean the device before reuse. Other meds may not mix with the previous med and, if used by different people, or pets, they may ingest part of the previous med as well. Discussing this issue with you physician is a must.)

I can definitely see the value of VitaCarry®. It appears to be well built, a good design and people/pet friendly. If you’re in the video production business you should find this article very interesting. If you’re not, I think you’ll enjoy reading about the concept and understanding how far we’ve come in useful applications for the world of the SmartPhone.

Those of us who have been involved in video production know how useful a teleprompter can be. Whether you’re a seasoned professional, or just a novice, making on-camera presentations can be challenging. Availability on short notice can be difficult, not to mention that the cost, purchase, or rental, can be expensive, especially when you may only require it for a few lines of script. Bodelin Technologies may just have the answer with its software app, PROPROMPTER for the iPhone. (also available for PocketPC, iPod Touch and LCD.) Like any other app, ProPrompter easily installs into the iPhone. Once loaded, the application makes use of the iPhone’s large display allowing copy to be easily viewed at reasonable distances from the camera. Software controls permit font size adjustments, scrolling speeds, font & background color selectability, countdowns and synching with more than one iPhone for multiple camera shoots.

The down and dirty approach is to simply butt-up the iPhone to the camera lens. Unlike cue cards, and due to its small size, this method actually worked well with virtually no off-camera look by the talent. Mounting the iPhone in this manner can be accomplished by your own ingenuity, or by purchasing the Wing & Mobile Clip accessory. Copy can be typed directly on the keyboard of the iPhone, or by sending the iPhone an email and then using the copy/paste method to place it into the ProPrompter program, or copy/paste from a web site. This is a very handy feature for broadcasters in the field. The ProPrompter may be remote controlled with another iPhone, or iPod Touch, providing it too has the ProPrompter app installed.

(TIP: Talent distance from the camera and general knowledge of the script all play a role in improving the on-screen look. A little practice and this really can work well.)

Another display method available is the HD ProMag accessory. It features a beam splitter with hood that mounts in front of the lens. This allows the talent to look directly into the lens with the added convenience of 2x magnification for up to a 15’ talent-to-camera distance. It’s the conventional method used by much larger and more expensive prompters.

The ProPrompter serves a definite purpose. While not the cure-all prompter, it certainly is a great tool to have when the unexpected need arises and at a cost that’s unbeatable! I tested it with the Wing & Mobile Clip accessory and found it easy to read and almost impossible to detect the fact that it’s mounted to the right of the lens. The HD ProMag accessory definitely adds value to the system and incorporates the HD 16x9 format to its usage. I definitely rate this as a must have tool for the serious videographer, as well as the seasoned professional.

(TIP: Multiple scripts may be stored in the ProPrompter program. The only limiting factor would be the amount of available memory in your device, perhaps justification for selecting the maximum memory available when purchasing your iPhone, iPod Touch, or PocketPC.)

I’ve tested many dishwashers over the years. My biggest complaint is that the dishes never have that sparkling look seen in the product and soap commercials, nor are heavily soiled items ever totally clean. Recently I tested one that really performs as advertised, and then some.

(TIP: Do not rely on exterior dimensions in determining if a specific model will fit under your counter. Tub configuration, such as, round or squared edges, can play a major role in calculating the final fit.)

The MDB7809AWM is an under-the counter, stainless exterior, model from Maytag. It features a stainless steel interior, resistant to rust and grime, a definite must-have, since this is the most common problem that determines the life of your machine. Two utensil racks may be easily mounted anywhere, however, mounting bottom right is preferred since this washer features a special high-pressure spray, Silverware Blast, aimed in that direction, with spotless results. Racks, upper & lower, as well as their accessories are adjustable for different size objects, a feature not commonly offered. This washer is outfitted with so many thoughtful features I could not possibly list them all.

Cycle & option selections appear somewhat intimidating at first glance. However, you’ll soon appreciate the benefits in deep cleaning and cost savings. These features include: Auto Clean Plus – Loads with heavy, normal, or light amounts of food soil; Heavy – Heavily soiled pots, pans, casseroles and tableware; Normal – Normal amounts of food soil; Light – China & crystal; Insta Wash – Quickly wash pre-rinsed glasses, or dishes; Rinse Only – Rinse loads that will not be washed immediately; Heat Dry – Extra heat drying; Sanitize – Raises time cycle & final rinse temp to 154°f. Steam Clean – Adds steam to the rinse cycle to deep clean & shine; High Temp Wash – Increases water temp during wash cycle.

(TIP: Use a product like “Finish Jet Dry”. Works with other features of this washer to give you that sparkling look. Dispenser with consumption gauge inside door.)

In my tests I used the Normal > Sanitize > Steam Clean settings. The results were always exceptional. The door has a tight seal, which makes it somewhat difficult to unlatch. This washer is well thought out. The inner stainless steel liner, handy interior features, superior construction and outstanding results make it a best buy.

(TIP: Any dishwasher needs periodic preventative maintenance. Products such as “Dishwasher Magic”, available at most supermarkets, remove lime scale and rust. They should be used in six-month intervals to prolong the life of your investment)

As we all know driving and using a cell phone is dangerous and perhaps even illegal, unless we have some form of hands free device. Most phones manufactured today offer a Bluetooth feature allowing external, wireless, accessories to be interconnected. I tested one such accessory by Scosche, known as the SolCHAT II.

The SolCHAT II is solar powered, however, a USB/DC plug is included for cloudy days. I’ve never resorted to its use even though my car is parked in an open-air garage under a building. The SolCHAT II also includes a housing that can mount the unit to your windshield via suction cups, or a visor clip, and makes it easy to remove the device from the mount when leaving the vehicle.

(TIP: Suction cup installation is probably the best, however suction cups will eventually detach from the glass surface. As a precaution, to minimize the possibility of loosing the speakerphone, I attached a small wire, such as a fishing leader, and connected it to the interior plastic windshield molding.)

A handy feature of the SolCHAT II is the ability to transfer up to 1000 of your phone’s contacts to the device. Doing so now permits audible caller ID and voice recognition dialing directly from your personal contact list, truly making this “hands free operation”. It is also possible to easily transfer in and out of the speakerphone mode for private conversations, naturally, when you are not the driver.

(TIP: How you names, last name first, or whatever, are entered into your phone’s contact list, will effect how the speakerphone recognizes, or announces the name via the caller ID feature.)

I found the SolCHAT II worked well with my iPhone, however, it should perform equally as well on most other brands providing they include Bluetooth technology. Since it’s powered by solar energy, or 12 volts DC, and offers a language selection that includes English, German, French, Italian and Spanish, it is a worldwide product. The built-in volume control offers sufficient range of audio levels for front seat operation. The only exception to this would be a noisy AC system, or having the windows down, both correctable scenarios when using the unit. The only other issue I found is that if you leave the vehicle, out of Bluetooth range, the device naturally disconnects from your phone, but remains powered up for a few minutes. Upon your return your phone will not reconnect and the SolCHAT II will automatically power off after ten minutes. I guess the auto shutdown feature out weighs a reconnect one?

At some point everyone upgrades their computer’s hard drive to a larger capacity drive, or perhaps even replaces the entire computer for a faster model. So what do you do with the old hard drive? No doubt you’ve heard the warnings about discarding drives? Even if you think you’ve erased all the data hackers have the know-how and ability to access this hidden information. So what should you do? You could destroy the old drive with a hammer, or, better yet, use the drive as a spare external storage device for back up purposes.

(TIP: The use of a spare hard drive in the dock could be used to clone your computer’s main hard drive. Cloning would permit booting up from the docked back up drive in the event the main drive crashes. Carbon Copy Cloner is free software available for Mac’s that easily does the job. Similar software is available for PC’s.)

Cables Unlimited has come up with an easy external docking solution. If you have a SATA type drive, as identified on the ID label of the drive, and probably the newest and most popular model, you can simply snap it into the unique docking station. If you have an eSATA drive, a cable adapter is provided for external hook up. The DOCK accepts most 2.5 and 3.5” SATA drives. The front base includes a 2.0 USB hub with 2 ports, and flash card slots for reading MS/MS DUO, CF and SD/MMC type cards commonly used in many digital cameras. The rear base includes the USB output port, an eSATA port for the previously described supplied adapter cable, power jack and on/off switch.

(TIP: Never hot swap, remove the drive, while the computer is powered up. You may, however, hot swap the USB connection to the computer.)

Using the dock is very easy. Simply insert the 2.5” SATA hard drive into the dock. If you have a 3.5” drive, flip the guide latch up and place the drive into the connector at the bottom. To remove either size drive a handy pullout cover is provided which assists pulling out the drive, up and out of the connector, accomplished by pulling the cover towards you.

(TIP: If you do not have a SATA drive, or have compatibility issues with this device, numerous adapter cables and housings are available to accommodate most other drives, or even this one, if compatibility issue arise.)

Using a docking device, adapter cable or housing is very easy. If you can read a label, you can easily determine what type of hard drive you have. Matching the type to the gadget needed is then not difficult. You’re now saving the environment, protecting your old data and gaining extra storage capabilities at the same time.

I found the USB-2155 DESKTOP HDD DOCK by Cables Unlimited to be a useful device that works in both the MAC and PC platforms, as well as some Casablanca Editors and can operate on 100-240 VAC, 50/60Hz, with the supplied power adapter. Even though it’s plastic, with the proper care it should give years of service. Further details are available at www.cablesunlimited.com. The DOCK is available at retail and on line.

(TIP: Compatibility is always a concern when purchasing any computer peripherals. Always ask about the return policy before making the purchase. When you purchase a device test it immediately so you can return non-compatible items in a timely manner. After all, computers sometimes have a mind of their own)

The iPhone 3G and 3GS are probably one of the best and most popular smart phones on the market today. However, anything electronic always has a downfall. In this case it’s the iPhone’s battery life. AT&T and Apple are quick to tell you to shut off things like 3G, wi-fi and many of the other neat features that we all paid for and want to use. Under normal circumstances I use the phone for incoming and outgoing calls ten, or more times a day. I probably use the Internet and/or email for about half an hour during this same period. My phone charges all night and begins its daily use cycle around 8 AM. Like clockwork, I can count on the battery being down to a 28% discharge by 7 PM. Apple indicates you should never let your phone discharge below 22%, as it will go into a safe mode that ceases all operations. Even the use of the AC adapter, or car cord has no effect at this point.

Mophie, an Apple products third party accessory provider, offers a simple and effective solution known as the “JUICE PACK AIR”. The JUICE PACK AIR is a shell that easily incases the iPhone and only adds a few ounces to the overall weight. In fact, I find the added weight and slight increase in size gives the iPhone a better, more secure feel. In this shell is a flat, non-visable/non-replaceable, battery that more than doubles your battery life and includes its own ‘charge remaining’ indicator. If size is not a consideration the original JUICE PACK, a model that is slightly bigger and provides a bit more charge, is also available.

(TIP: 3GS models have a setting under settings>general>usage that activates the percentage readout feature. The percentage appears next to your battery symbol on the top right of the home page)

When your battery approaches the 22% mark, you just turn on the JUICE PACK AIR with the switch on the bottom right edge. JUICE PACK AIR now begins charging your original battery while allowing full use of the phone. JUICE PACK AIR uses its own USB cable that charges both batteries and can sync your iPhone as well. Also available, but not tested by me, is the JUICE PACK TV that not only provides the extra battery power, but also includes live TV viewing. It requires an additional service provided by AT&T on a monthly fee basis.

I’ve tested the JUICE PACK AIR and find it works well. The extra weight and size better fits my grip and makes it less likely to be dropped. The design is much better than some of the other products available. They attach like large appendages that can easily break off, and make for a clumsy phone. The USB cable supplied is too short, a problem plaguing most iPhone car cords and the Scosche Bluetooth speakerphone, a gadget I will review in a future article. I give the JUICE PACK AIR five stars since it’s well built, works exceptionally well and seems to be the best external battery pack available.

It’s interesting to note, Mophie is currently developing the MARKETPLACE, a magnetic strip reader for the 3G and 3GS iPhones. This device looks much like the JUICE PACK, but will read credit cards and automatically send electronic receipts to the customer. The Apple stores currently use a similar device in place of checkout counters, so Apple associates all carry one. Everyone enjoys some form of hot drink, whether it’s coffee, hot, or iced tea, hot chocolate, or your own wonderful concoction. The problem typically is the mess you create and the time it takes to make it all come together. Keurig, one of several hot drink brewer device manufactures, has a unique answer. Imagine, no more scorched pots, hot burners, or cooked brews.

Recently I tested two of Keurig’s one-cup brewers. My favorite, for reasons that will become obvious, is the model B155. This gadget has an easily refilled reservoir that holds 90 ounces of water. It can dispense any of four-cup sizes, 4, 6, 8 and 10 ounces. When left on, there’s no fire hazard here, a fresh cup of whatever is less than one-minute away. In home settings it’s easy to shut down the system during non-use periods to conserve energy, since heating the reservoir only take a few moments.

Here’s how it works. Plug the brewer into 120 volts AC, fill the detachable water container and power up. The heating process will now take place. When ready, the interactive touch screen display alerts you to the ready status. Place your cup, or glass below the brewer on the removable spill tray, lift the brewer handle, insert your K-Cup selection from dozens of brews available, and place the handle back down. Now the interactive display will ask you to select the cup size, then press the BREW button below the display and walla you have your hot drink in a matter of seconds. Since the brewer dispenses hot water thru the brewer container it’s possible to make drinks without the use of K-Cups by simply adding the ingredients to your cup or glass. It’s quick to see that you’ll never have over-brewed, stale, or leftover drinks, and clean up is virtually nothing. A word of caution, the K-Cup holder uses an upper and lower sharp needle to puncture the K-Cup, so care must be taken when cleaning this area to avoid injury. Descaling, a process to remove mineral and calcium deposits built up from your local water supply, is recommended every 3 – 6 months and easily accomplished.

A wide variety of K-Cup brews are readily available at grocers, retailers and on-line. Each single cup made offers individual drinking pleasure of your favorite brew. Seasonal flavors like pumpkin are also offered.

I also tested Keurig’s “Mini Personal Brewer”. It incorporates the same brewing method as all the other models, however, does not have the reservoir feature thus requiring individual water fill-ups. It also features a cup detection sensor that prevents spillage if no cup were present. This is a feature that should be added to the B155 previously reviewed. All Keurig models are designed for commercial and residential use with ground plug power connection.

One of many options available, while not tested by me, looks very interesting. The Café One-Touch stand-a-lone Milk Frother makes frothed, or warm milk at the touch of a button and would probably be nice for cappuccino style coffee, or a special cup of hot chocolate. ($79.95)

These two Keurig models are superior, well-built products. They do what they claim, are easy to use and require virtually no after-use clean up. I give them a well-deserved three thumbs up. Many of us are insomniacs and wind up reading in bed. The problem, how do you read without disturbing your significant other? The answer, perhaps, is the series of LIGHTWAVE products known as LightWedge.

Reading lights are certainly not new, however, finding one that actually allows you to easily read and not disturb others is the trick. I recently tested the LightWedge Paperback LED book light from LIGHTWAVE. It’s sized to fit mass-market paperback books and features a viewing area of 7 x 3.75 inches. You simply lay the page-sized, acrylic lens over the page and two bright LED’s shine light thru the plastic lens’ edge thus lighting the entire page evenly with virtually no spillover. Four triple A batteries provide forty-hours of reading pleasure. Its compact size, lightweight construction weighing only 6.5 ounces and a fabric case makes it ideal for travel, or home use.

I found this gadget to exceed all my expectations. My only caution is the acrylic surface scratches easily and I found the batteries a bit difficult to install. I give the LightWedge three thumbs up because it does its job well.

Transporting pets safely has always been a worry for pet owners, especially when flying. Komfort Pets, a Massachusetts based company, offers a climate controlled solution, the Komfort Pets Carrier II.

The Komfort Pets Carrier is a pet crate that comes with a fold-down handle, in three sizes; small for pets under 10 pounds, medium for pets under 30 pounds and large for pets under 60 pounds. It’s made of durable plastic, stackable with the use of an optional adapter and available in a selection of four colors.

What makes the Komfort Pets Carrier unique is the ability to climate control your pet’s environment while being transported in the carrier. The base of the carrier contains a sealed climate control module which when powered up from an optional 3 hr battery pack, or the provided external 12 volt power source, automatically produces warmth when the outside temperature reaches below 55°f (13°c), and cooling when the temperature exceeds 72°f (22°c). The temperature changes take place on a plate mounted on about 2/3rds of the center of the carrier’s floor. Since nature has provided pets with a fur coat, the unprotected belly of the pet makes contact with this area and provides cooling, or warmth throughout the body resulting in climate comfort for your pet. It’s somewhat the same as when your pet lies on a cool concrete floor in the summer, or your carpet in the winter. You could call it a dual conduction/convection system. Since direct contact with this area is required, the use of cushions, or a lining, is not suggested. An optional perimeter pad that does not make contact with this area is available for added comfort. The carrier’s design includes a groove and an insertable sponge that absorbs as much as 16 ounces of liquid and is very easy to clean. Side mounted seatbelt holders are provided to secure the carrier in your car.

I tested the original Komfort Pets Carrier. This model, while supplies last, has most of the stated features with a slightly different control panel. The model II, available late summer of 2010, incorporates LED indicators combined with an on/off switch and fan only mode. I found the automatic temperature control to perform well. The construction of the carrier is excellent and the addition of the cooling module seemed to add very little extra weight. Since a cigarette lighter DC cord is supplied with a 110 volt power supply (voltage converters for 220/240 volt use work well for European applications) the need for the optional battery pack would probably be limited to air travel where a 12 volt source may not be available. The pet carrier is FAA compliant and so far two airlines, JAL and Continental, have agreed to provide 12-volt connections in the future, a trend that will hopefully catch on.

I think the Komfort Pets Carrier is a unique product that fills a void in transporting pets. It works well, is affordably priced, well built and provides superior comfort for the traveling pet. Ever had the desire to view a program back home while on the road? Well, most of us have, as did two brothers, Blake and Jason Krikorian. While traveling during the 2002 Major League Baseball season, they were forced to miss the best games that year and decided to find a solution. The Slingbox was born, and is now a part of the Echostar/Dish Network family of products.

So, what is the Slingbox you say? Slingbox is a simple box, which connects to virtually any video device such as a DVR (TIVO), DVD player, cable tuner or live camera, and your broadband Internet router. Most models even include a self-contained tuner that may be selected. When operational, Slingbox allows you to access these devices remotely from your laptop, or even from many Smartphones when Sling’s proprietary software is installed.

I tested the “PRO-HD” version. This model easily allows connection between your HD equipment and the Slingbox. While the signal sent via the internet to your laptop may not be full HD, I did notice a distinct increase in overall picture quality using this model. Having also tested a standard model I must admit its picture quality is almost as good. The design of the Slingbox uses a compression method, which constantly optimizes the video signal making it the best streaming I’ve ever seen. Receiving this signal from your home system simply requires a modern day PC, MAC or Smartphone meeting certain specifications as shown on the Sling web site. Since most computers have a “video out” port, it is possible to view your program on a large format display with video inputs. I have an iBook hooked up to a 26” flat screen TV at my condo in Port Argéles, France. Imagine watching live or previously recorded American television in France where normally no English programming is available. The quality is OUTSTANDING!!! Naturally, Sling offers PAL versions permitting Europeans to view their programs while in America. I’ve also tested the PAL version with a British friend who allows me to use his ID code and password to view the BBC and ITV and, yes, pass it thru to my American (NTSC) television set with no additional standards conversion device. In fact, if you have the ID and password to any Slingbox you can watch it no matter where it’s located. The catch is only one viewer can access it at a time. This is not a limitation of the technology, but rather to cover copyright infringement issues. It’s that simple. Once you have the ID code and password for a particular Slingbox, and have the free software downloaded on your computer, you are good to go. The same applies to Smartphones with the exception that the software is not free. My tests with a PALM 700 Smartphone proved equally as good. Perhaps the only difficulty was the screen size when selecting programs from the TIVO menu. An Apple iPhone with its larger display would probably be a better choice.

The Slingbox offers full control of the device you have plugged into it. I use an HD TIVO. The TIVO provides both an HD tuner capable of receiving the full range of cable HD channels when your cable provider supplies a cable card. The TIVO remote appears on the screen when selected and offers all the functions of playback and record found on your home unit. If you can do it at home, you can do it wherever you are.

Slingbox is a neat consumer product lending itself to certain professional applications requiring high quality, long length video streaming. CleanWave, THE MAGIC WAND THAT HELPS ELIMINATE AND CONTROL ALLERGENS, BACTERIA AND VIRUSES

Lately we’ve been hearing a lot about germs, viruses and the need to keep things clean so we can prevent illness. Washing hands is certainly a good first step, but what about devices that can help eliminate and control bacteria, viruses, germs and allergens in our everyday lives? Do such things exist? Perhaps Verilux, The Healthy Lighting Company, in Waitsfield, Vermont has an answer with their CleanWave UV-C Sanitizing Wand.

I tested the model VH01WW4 standard-size portable wand. The concept is the wand’s Ultraviolet UV-C lamp emits a blue colored light over any given one-foot area using side-to-side motion, 1/2” or less above the surface. The area then becomes decontaminated. The built-in timer lets you see how long you are over any given area making sure you allow enough time to decontaminate it. This wand is not to be used for body or food purposes, but works well with bedding, mattresses, kitchenware, dentures, contacts, brushes, pet areas, handrails, showers, remote controls, computer keyboards, toilet seats, cell phones, doorknobs, light switches and anything else that comes in contact with germs. (Nurse’s shoes after a shift at the hospital) It effectively eliminates *H1N1, MSRA, dust mites, E. Coli, Rotavirus, bacteria, mold and many more viruses including type A, B and C influenza. Generally speaking, viruses, which are much smaller than bacteria, are killed in seconds. Bacteria will take a few more seconds while molds and yeasts may take a bit longer. The point here is that the UV-C technology used in the CleanWave wand has the potential of killing most of them.

As part of my testing procedure I enlisted the help of an MD, nurse and a dentist for more in-depth evaluation and feedback. While in the doctor’s waiting room, with the aid of a magnifier/black light, we observed germs breeding on an armrest. Once the CleanWave was utilized, the germs disappeared.

To substantiate my findings, I reviewed lab tests conducted by an independent lab for the manufacturer. Figure “A” shows a culture of Salmonella typhi before and then after an application with the wand. One can clearly see the elimination of most of the Salmonella typhi.

The CleanWave Sanitizing Wand utilizes a long-standing proven technology, UV-C. The medical profession in labs, hospitals and public places has long recognized its use. Verilux’s introduction to the home market now makes it available for every day use by the general public. Its simplicity and small size makes it a practical solution for the consumer who wishes to maintain a near germ free environment. It’s primarily designed to operate in a horizontal position since a built-in safety feature turns it off when placed vertically. I did find this new model would operate, however, at a slight angle allowing wall areas to be treated. The two highly detailed user guides offer tips and many recommended uses along with a recommended use schedule. Also included is a multi-voltage charger for worldwide use. My only complaint is the timer should be programmed in five-second increments that better relate to specific application timings outlined in the instructions. Ever wish there were a better way to cook eggs? Well, the EGG GENIE may finally be the answer. Usually the infomercial gadgets leave much to be desired. The magic they show on television commercials is anything but magic at home. Not so with the EGG GENIE.

The EGG GENIE electric egg cooker cooks hard-boiled, soft boiled and poached eggs to perfection. It consists of a base, a seven-egg tray, a four-egg poach tray, a see-thru plastic cover and a measuring cup. To cook eggs simply remove the clear plastic lid and fill the bottom of the aluminum plate with cold water. Distilled water is suggested to prevent discoloration of the eggs and the plate, however tap water works just fine. Fill the measuring cup with water to the level that equals the number of eggs you wish to cook. Up to seven soft or hard-boiled, or four poached eggs can be cooked at a time. A steel pin is provided on the base for piercing of hard and soft eggs. Place the egg tray into position. Place the desired number of eggs into the tray, pierced side up. If cooking poached eggs, break open up to four eggs and put the contents into the poach egg container. The container is now placed on top of the tray. Place the cover over the eggs and plug into the electric wall socket. Note, no switch or power indicator is provided, so when the buzzer sounds, disconnect from the electric outlet. This is not a design error, but rather an inexpensive way to power on/off the cooker and prevent over cooking, or burnout of the plate. Be careful to stay clear of the vent on the cover while cooking, as hot steam will be ejected during and after the cooking process. Let cool and then enjoy your perfectly cooked eggs.

TIP: Place cooked eggs in a container filled with cold water and let set for five minutes. This makes for even better tasting eggs.

Cleanup is a snap too. If you used tap water you’ll need to wipe off the brown residue on the metal plate, otherwise a quick wipe down and your finished. What could be simpler?

I was very impressed with the simplicity and the no-mess operation, however, when making poached eggs I suggest using a cooking spray such as Pam to make egg removal and cleanup a bit easier. Certainly beats standing over a hot stove waiting for water to boil. My only objection is the measuring cup needs to have colored lettering making it easier to read the various water level markings. The EGG GENIE does what it advertises, cook eggs to perfection!

The EGG GENIE is available at retail outlets that stock “As Seen On TV” products and on line. Currently there appears to be no European model available. When disaster strikes how would you charge your handheld electronic devices? Better Energy Systems may have the answer with their line of Solio pocket size solar chargers. Three models are available, the Classic, the H1000 and the Magnesium Edition, with the main differences being in charging capacity.

How do they work? Each model has it’s own built-in battery. This user replaceable battery is charged by direct sunlight, an eight to 10 hour process, or by a supplied universal AC power adapter. Once the battery is full you are ready to charge your device at any time. Shelf life is up to one-year. A basic set of tips and USB adapter is supplied, quantity and type determined by model selected. Additional optional tips are available to interconnect numerous other devices and brands of mobile phones, MP3 players, GPS units and a SOLIO LED light. A suction cup holder is included allowing mounting on a window so it can be aimed directly at the sun. An LED indicator/switch, when depressed, sets the charging cycle in operation. It also indicates the amount of charge stored in the unit. Five rapid flashes and you’re 100% charged. A fully charged Classic will charge a typical cell phone more than twice, or give over 20 hours of iPod music. In many cases just 1 hour of sunshine equals twenty-minutes talk time, or fifty-minutes of MP3 music. Once again, performance varies depending on the type of device, device’s battery capacity and intensity of sunlight.

I tested the Classic, a three-blade set of small panels that neatly folds up into a compact stack and easily fits into your pocket. This model was supplied with numerous tips, and a USB adapter accommodates a single tip. Note only one device may be charged at a time. As my luck would have it, a Palm Treo PDA adapter was not one of those included, so I ordered one from Solio’s web site at a cost of $9.95. Since the Treo’s power consumption is rather high, a 50% charge was only possible over about a four-hour period.

In general the Solio Classic worked as promised. The plastic suction cup mount, however, leaves a bit to be desired. I would like to see a better mounting system even if it becomes an optional extra. Since direct sunlight is required, window mounting becomes essential, unless you are outdoors for the period of time required to fully charge the unit. Naturally, if you use the AC power adapter, a mount is not required. This method is quick and easy and desirable for pre-power-outage storage. It’s interesting to note these solar charging devices have become standard issue by disaster relief agencies in many natural disasters worldwide and have even found their way in the extremes of the Arctic. Unfortunately, Solio chargers are not designed to charge or operate laptops. I give it two thumbs up.

Not since the introduction of VHS have I seen a video product generate so much fun, excitement and practicality. FLIP VIDEO™ is a tiny video camcorder smaller than a pack of cigarettes, housed in a rugged designer case that incorporates up to 8gb of built-in memory. Since its launch in 2007, more than 2 million units have been sold. Connecting your FLIP to your computer is as easy as pushing a button causing a USB 2 connector to flip out, thus the name FLIP VIDEO™. The supplied NTSC cable for SD models and an optional HDMI™ cable for the HD version accomplish connecting to your TV.

My tests revealed the video quality to be exceptional. In all situations the FLIP outperformed my wildest expectations. I have spoken with a producer of documentaries that used FLIP HD footage as “B” roll and intermixed it with broadcast level HD recordings. Results were outstanding. It’s a good bet that you’re probably like many other people with a VHS or Betamax tape collection looking for an easy way to preserve tapes to DVD. How to do it, and at what price? ROXIO, the makers of Toast and many other useful software programs, recently introduced EASY VHS to DVD in a MAC and PC edition. Both systems work basically the same way. Since I’m a MAC person, I tested the MAC version.

The kit consists of a USB capture device with composite, S video and stereo RCA audio connections, USB extension cord, plus capture software and a basic version of Toast. Toast is a ROXIO program that makes burning a DVD, on your DVD burner-equipped computer, a snap. Toast is not supplied with the PC version.

Once the operating software is installed, simply plug the capture device into a USB 2.0 port on your computer. The software automatically detects NTSC and PAL sources, so no selection is required to determine the TV standard. When a deck, camcorder or other analog video device is plugged in and the software is selected from the application’s folder you will be directed to a step-by-step setup checklist that allows you to see and hear the source you have plugged in. After everything is verified to be working, you will be asked how long a segment you wish to record and if you would like to automatically stop at that preset time limit. This is a great feature and worth using since video downloads utilize very large amounts of hard drive space, and should you be distracted during the recording process, you won’t fill up the drive. You are also given the choice of quality, standard (1.8 GB per hour), or high quality, (2.7 GB per hour), that are MPEG-2 recordings. The next step is to start the playback of your source material and to start the recording process. Once the recording is completed you have three choices: send to Toast for immediate burning of a DVD; edit with iMovie software which came installed in your MAC, or Creator for PC, and not included in the ROXIO kit; send to QuickTime Player for creation and immediate playback in the QT format, handy for adding to iTunes and then syncing to your iPod or iPhone. If you opt to quit the program in a MAC your movie file will be found under users/name of hard drive/movies/Easy VHS to DVD capture. On a PC look for the file MY VIDEOS.

The use of this kit is so easy and quick, especially since you can make DVD’s without the use of complicated editing software, that copying your analog library becomes a breeze, even for the novice. Prior to purchasing either package be sure to check the system requirements at the ROXIO web site to insure your computer is up to the task.

DECT, Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications, 6.0 is a new protocol and frequency standard used for cordless phone transmissions. The 6.0 version is designed for use in the USA, while other versions do exist for other countries and other purposes. The 6.0 version is the next generation step up from the 2.4 and 5.8 GHz systems and is 1.9 GHz. Unlike those systems DECT. 6.0 phones are virtually immune to most local interference including disruption of wireless internet, wi-fi, use. An extra layer of encryption that previous technology did not offer, keeps your personal communications safe and enhances security. The noticeable result is clearer calls without crosstalk interference. The addition of extra handsets is made easier and battery life may be extended as much as 30%.

One manufacturer that offers DECT 6.0 technology is VTECH. I recently tested their newest model, the DS6222-5, a five-handset system that includes a digital answering system. (The last digit indicates the number of handsets in the system) I found the sound quality to be greatly improved and in a 1650 Sq. Ft. condo constructed of steel and concrete walls, the transmission never faded or dropped out, nor were there any dead spots. Entering numbers into the 50 number directory is a snap since all entries made from any handset are automatically updated for use by all other handsets in the system. Handsets are automatically assigned an individual number from 1 – 12 depending on the number of handsets in the system, that appears in the display. A blue backlit display makes for easy visibility of the data information being shown as well as highlighting the numeric keypad in the dark. Incoming calls cause it to light up on all the handsets even when the ringer is turned off. In the event of a power failure, or dead battery, all stored directory information, phone preference settings, outgoing message and recorded messages are retained. An intercom feature allows one handset to contact another, or the transfer of a call to another handset. Some of the other features include: caller ID/call waiting; 14 minute answering machine; handset speakerphone that works exceptionally well; possible addition of optional handsets to a maximum of 12; conference outside calls to other handsets; any key answer; remote message retrieval; handset volume control; last number redial; page/handset locater; selectable ring tones; wall mounting bracket; compatible with hearing aid T-coil.

Two features need improvement. The wall mount bracket needs a compartment, or pocket to hide the excess cables of the line and power cords. The caller ID feature needs to offer a talking capability that announces the name and number of the incoming caller, a feature that is not available on any of the VTECH models, but is available on many competitive brands. I rate this feature high on my list of must haves in this day and age of nuisance calls. One caller ID feature that is nice is that all incoming call numbers are stored for future review unless you delete them. Also, during my two-month test, I had one handset fail. Simply unplugging the battery momentarily reset the phone and corrected the problem, a common solution for most of today’s electronics. It would also be nice if the directory capacity were increased to 100. All things considered I give the VTECH system one thumbs up and DECT 6.0, three thumbs up. As one who lives in a high rise Florida condominium where gas and charcoal grills are forbidden by law, I find the availability of quality electric grills to be disappointing. Florida, Arizona and California probably lead in such condo-dwellings, but yet try to purchase an electric grill there, it’s near impossible!

In recent years I’ve located and tested a few electric models found on the web. Unfortunately, all were disappointing, including a well-known celebrity brand.

Recently, Weber introduced the Q 140, a moderately priced compact electric grill patterned after their Q Series gas models. This grill features an easily removable aluminum bowl liner that can be lined with foil to make clean up a snap (figure A); a stainless steel rod cooking grate that creates perfect sear marks and is dishwasher safe; 1560 (2000 European model) watts of heat created from two coils that are uniquely configured into six exposed rods that create the most even heat surface I’ve ever experienced in an electric grill (figure A); an over-sized, replaceable grease catch pan that eliminates the mess after the cooking experience. (You can also line this with foil and extend the replacement life of the disposable pan); cast aluminum construction, stainless steal and plastic throughout prevents rust and makes the unit very light weight. The lid has a built-in heat retention liner that reflects the heat back to the food being cooked. This also acts as somewhat of an insulator keeping the heat contained while minimizing the heat on the outer lid surface, a feature not often found on other grills. A multi-adjustable thermostat allows for a variety of heat settings.

Unfortunately, very few factory options are available. While the catalog refers to numerous such items for the “Q” Series, they’re actually referring to non-electric models only. I would like to see a griddle made available. Weber does offer an inexpensive model 6507 rolling cart ($55.00). Since the Q 140 is so compact I found the Rubbermaid # 7085 storage cabinet to work well too ($89.00). The grill nicely sets on the cabinet surface, and is easily stored and protected from the elements on the enclosed shelves below. While not supplied, casters can easily be added by the handy do-it-yourselfer. As for a griddle, several name brands are available. The trick is finding one small enough to fit the cooking grate. The thickness of such griddles prevents keeping the lid closed, thus much heat is lost in the cooking process. While a bit clumsy, I found the Emerileware cast iron reversible grill/griddle to work reasonably well ($35.00). When using any griddle attachment extreme caution should be taken, as the griddle, as well as the Q 140, will be very hot long after the food is cooked and the unit is shut off.

My overall experience was exceptionally good. The grill is extremely well built and virtually rust resistant. It’s very compact and heats up fast and evenly. Clean up is very quick due to the easily accessible and removable parts. I give it three thumbs up, my highest rating. The Q 140 should be typically a retailer item, but be prepared to special order it as I could not locate this model in stock at numerous Weber dealers I visited. Weber has an on-line store, but this item is not a selectable item. They do show a phone number, 800.446.1071 as an alternative to on-line ordering. Amazon U. S. and UK* do list this model. *A 220/240-VAC model is available for the European market. More details available at: weber.com. The Q 140, a well kept secret well worth the effort to locate it!

At this year’s Consumer Electronics Show, CES, I had the opportunity to obtain a pair of Z buds™ Music Control™ ear buds manufactured by Zagg. For the uninitiated, ear buds are extremely lightweight headsets that fit in your ear and are used in products such as cell phones, ipods and virtually any other listening device.

Z buds™ were designed primarily for Apple products such as ipods and iphones. (Music Control only works with iphone) These buds and some of their features will, however, work with non-Apple products that use a 3.5mm four conductor mini plug.

The Z buds™ are well designed. They incorporate features like a noise canceling microphone that reduces ambient sounds from overpowering your speech when talking; a click button on the mic’s housing that can turn music on and off, or answer and hang up your phone calls; a two-click feature advances you to the next song; an in-line volume control that readjusts volume when the device’s volume is set to max; multiple sliders for cable length adjustment; a wide selection of ear bud adapters to fit all ears.

I tested these buds under various conditions and found the audio reproduction to be outstanding (30hz to 16Khz). A friend of mine with a hearing loss in one ear used them while driving home and commented that she could hear so much better. It’s important to note that the unique “hangin’ tight” neck-cord feature keeps them in place around your neck. (See illustration above) The materials used to construct the buds are top notch and include a heavy-duty 54” cable. The rugged construction revivals that of units costing many times over the MSRP of $79.95. I give the Z buds™ a thumbs up for a feature packed, quality product at an affordable price. CD and DVD media storage has become quite the popular method for copying data, audio and video material. The difficulty becomes trying to identify the material once it’s on the disc. Numerous attempts have been made by inkjet printer manufacturers to incorporate disc media into paper fed printers. The problem typically is that mixing paper and disc stock results in ink residue that appears on the next printing job after changing the print stock. Printing on paper labels or stickers that are affixed to Cd and DVD media is not recommended by hardware manufactures as it can jam the recorder/player or create improper balance that results in disc errors. The use of a Sharpie looks very unprofessional and mistakes are not easily corrected. So what’s the solution?

DYMO® has introduced the DiscPainter® that is a low volume USB printer made exclusively for printing on discs. The DiscPainter® interfaces with Windows® and most Mac® OS X systems. Its small size, about like two stacked cigar boxes, allows it to be easily stored with your computer. Unfortunately no power switch is included, something I hope they correct. Printing is accomplished by a “spin on disc system” known as RadialPrint™, that results in very high quality reproduction of up to 1200 dpi. Depending on the quality setting, printing takes place from 1-3 minutes. The DiscPainter® uses one all-color ink cartridge with built-in print head. This is a nice feature since you are automatically getting a new print head with each new ink cartridge replacement thus maintaining high quality printing over the life of the printer. DYMO® tells me that one can expect better than 5000 impressions before printer replacement. Since this unit is not intended as a high volume printer it should provide many years of service. The ink cartridge will last from 100-150 impressions, or more, depending on the quality setting and equal use of colors in the artwork layout. (The use of the high quality setting uses much more ink, creates a thicker coating on the surface which may result in ink cracks and peeling over the life of the disc. This applies to any disc printing device.)

DYMO® includes a feature-packed software program known as Discus®. It can be used as a stand-a-lone creator or with PhotoShop®, PrintShop®, Adobe Illustrator®, InDesign®, QuarkXPress®, and SureThing® just to mention a few. Discus® includes several canvases as general backgrounds. Personally, I’d like to see more backgrounds made available as they speed up the process in making a quick layout. The DiscPainter® printer and Discus® software may be used with many other printers and software programs which makes this product extremely versatile. I was able to print professional quality discs straight out of the box without the use of test prints or lengthy instructions. I give it a thumbs up. If you use Apple™ earbuds for listening to your ipod™, or iPhone™ you know the discomfort one can experience wearing them. Earbuds are made from a hard plastic that is wedged into your ear canal. The Budfit is a simple plastic molded device that fits around the rear of the ears. The earbud’s wire slips into a cutout in the mold and the physical earbud slips into the top end. You place the Budfit behind your ears so that the earbud hangs in front of the ear canal opening. You’ll still experience all the fidelity of sounds generated by the earbud with none of the discomfort even though there is a bit of space between you and the earbud. Ambient noise is kept to a minimum, however someone speaking to you, providing the volume is set to a normal listening level, can still be heard.

I’ve tested the Budfits while walking in 35 – 40 mile per hour wind gusts along Florida’s Intercoastal Waterway and had no problem keeping them in position on my ears. Thus, they are great when running, skateboarding or any other fast moving activity. A neat, simple invention that deserves a try. I give them a thumbs up.

Is the videophone here at last?

Many years ago it was predicted that by the end of the century we would all have video telephones. Well, many attempts have been made at this, but until recently it was not a practical means of communications. High costs, bulky equipment and large bandwidth requirements slowed down the progress. Enter the Internet and a company called SKYPE. SKYPE, now owned by EBAY, is one of many VOIP (voice over internet protocol) providers. What makes them different is that they offer a live video service in addition to standard voice communications. Like other providers, a small fee is charged for voice communications unless you are calling another SKYPE subscriber, and then it’s free. Since video-to-video calling requires a service such as SKYPE chances are it will be free to you.

How does it work? First, you need a PC or Macintosh computer hooked up to a cable or DSL broadband service. Your computer should be a model manufactured within the past three or four years. In the case of a MAC it needs to have OSX as its operating system. You need a webcam and a microphone. Many computers now feature built-in webcams and microphones, but if yours doesn’t have one, low cost models are available for under $50. Such external components generally require USB2 or Firewire inputs to make them work. If you have a MAC you may have to download a free driver since many webcams come with PC software only.

One such site for Logitec cameras is: webcamosx.sourceforge.net/downloads.htm. You may also be able to use your home digital camcorder that has a Firewire output. When you have all the necessary components at hand you’ll need to download the free SKYPE software at: skype.com. Once installed, webcam and microphone plugged in, just follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation and camera/microphone preference settings. Now you’re ready to add SKYPE addresses that your family or friends may have given you, or simply look them up in the worldwide SKYPE directory. SKYPE protects you from receiving unwanted calls by asking the called party if they wish to add you as a contact. SKYPE also works with audio/video on one end and voice on the other in the event you call someone who doesn’t have a webcam. They’ll see and hear you, but you’ll only hear them. You’ll be amazed at the video quality. The only thing better is something Apple calls iChat. This software is a standard feature on all Macintosh computers. While iChat is superior and also free, it only works Mac-to-Mac, whereas SKYPE is a multi-platform service. No matter which one you choose, imagine the thrill of seeing your grandchild for the first time, or that long lost friend. This is also a great tool for business where the conference feature could be valuable.

You may wonder how SKYPE makes any money. Most SKYPE subscribers call people that are not SKYPERS. In other words they use the SKYPE network to make regular landline calls worldwide. Years ago communities were served by only one phone provider. There was simply no alternative. Today the market is flooded with numerous choices, which have dramatically lowered the price of phone service while adding many more features. One such choice is VOIP (voice over internet protocol) that uses your existing cable broadband Ethernet Internet connection in place of a phone line. The advantage of VOIP is that you already have a link to the outside world, so shopping for service plans becomes the only additional cost. The key is to compare the offers. Things to consider are price, calling areas that are included, features such as message waiting, caller ID, voice mail and the reliability of the company. Some of the better-known providers are, Brighthouse (mybrighthouse.com), Time Warner (www.buytimewarner.com), Vonage (www.vonage.com) and Knology (www.knology.com). An interesting point is that Vonage has been hit by several patent infringement lawsuits brought by some of its competitors, but to date seems to have satisfactorily resolved these issues and remains very much a player in this competitive field.

How does VOIP work? The company you select will either install or provide you with a modem, a device that converts the digital signal to work with your existing telephone instruments in your home network. You may also request your old phone number be transferred to this service. The modem, the size of a paperback book, simply connects to your existing router, which in turn is connected to any telephone jack in your home. Now you have connectivity between the Internet and the phones in your home network. Your computer does not need to be on or plugged in for this to work. Pick up any phone in your home network and start talking. You can even take the modem with you when you travel providing you have access to a broadband Ethernet Internet connection. This permits you to still receive and make all your calls from your home number wherever you may be.

The downside to VOIP is that you are dependent on a good broadband Ethernet connection. Faster speeds mean better voice quality. If the power goes out, so does the phone, however, this is easily remedied by adding a low cost battery backup system, better known as a UPS (uninterruptible power source). You are probably not aware of it, but this is exactly what the large phone companies do. Heavy Internet network system usage can cause busy signals or dropped calls. This is rare, but a possibility. Also, many fax machines and TIVO devices have difficulty communicating with VOIP service.

There are many benefits to VOIP, such as lower costs with a greatly expanded calling area. Vonage, for example treats all of the U. S., Canada, Puerto Rico, France, Spain, Italy, Ireland and the U. K. as a local call. They also provide local access numbers in Canada, France, Mexico, Spain, the U. K. and the U. S. that allow free calls to be made to their customers from these countries. Furthermore, you may check your messages by not only dialing into a mailbox, but also going on line. Business plans are quite often available too, but you would be well advised not to switch all your lines to VOIP. By not doing so you create a backup source in case either service has a major outage. I have used VOIP technology in business and residential applications and have benefited from significant cost savings over landline service. Generally speaking, I am very satisfied.

One of the innovative items at the 2008 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas was the TeleSpy, a traditional-looking and normally operating telephone. What makes the TeleSpy unique is its ability to act as a no-cost security monitoring system.

Installation is quick and simple. If you can plug a phone into a standard phone jack, then you can install the TeleSpy. There are no complicated adjustments to activate. Simply position and aim the phone in the direction of the area you want monitored. Plug the standard modular plug into your phone jack and plug the supplied AC power adapter into the jack on the side of the phone.

The 30-foot throw distance covers a 20-foot-wide area. Use the test position switch to compensate for pets. To arm, pick up the handset and dial in the phone number you want called in the event of an intrusion, then hang up. Since this becomes the last number dialed, it’s in the phone’s memory and will be the number called. Turn the power switch on.

When the phone senses an intrusion in the specified area, it will silently dial the number you requested, be it a wired or cell phone model, anywhere in the world. When that phone answers, you will hear everything going on for up to 60 seconds. After a 30-second reset period, that number will be dialed again if the activity is still present. In the meantime, you contact your local law enforcement agency to report the intrusion.

When you use an external siren and the security mode is turned on, no number is dialed and the siren is heard immediately.

This feature is handy when you are sleeping and want to be alerted to unwanted activity in the area.

An additional feature allows external devices like a smoke alarm or window/door switch to be plugged in. If a fire breaks out or an unwanted entry is made, the phone is triggered to become active and you are alerted.

Since this is a self-contained device you pay no monthly fees to anyone. I tested this phone and found it to work well.

Playback quality depends on encoding, the caliber of disc and how much information is stored.

How many times have you attempted to play a DVD only to have it rejected, pixilate, skip or freeze? You can blame a lot of different factors and the lack of a single standard.

Let's start with the various DVD formats and standards:

DVD REPLICATED: This is a DVD that is stamped as opposed to being burned. It's generally used in high-volume duplication, such as the feature films you find in your local video store. In theory, replicated DVDs should play in most DVD players with little or no problem. But not long ago, I bought three major studios' DVDs, and two of the three were rejected by my name-brand player. The LCD readout indicated that they were blank, but when I tried another player, they worked fine. This is simply the nature of a technology that I like to refer to as A Work In Progress.

BURNED DISCS: DVD-R is the most popular and is used for video and data recording. It is also available in a camcorder version that stores 1.4 gigabytes, 30 minutes or 500 still images, and is smaller so it can easily fit in a palm-size camcorder. DVD+R also is used for data and video recording, but it is far less popular. Both of these formats are available in a RW version, which means that they can be erased and recorded up to 1,000 times. DVD-RAM is a less popular variety, and can store 2.8GB, 60 minutes or 1,000 still images. It is available in a RW version, which can be erased and rerecorded up to 100,000 times.

Well, you have your player, but some of your discs have problems playing back. What causes that?

ENCODING: Many different computer programs encode DVDs, and no two are alike. Therefore, the manufacturer of the player must incorporate these differences into their reading software. If they don't, you could have a problem. Rapid scene changes and transitions can cause drastic data-rate fluctuations, which can affect a clean playback.

COMPRESSION: Compression removes redundancies, or repetitions, in digital media to reduce the amount of recorded information so it can fit on a disc. The more you try to fit on a disc, the more compression is required and the greater chance of reproduction defects and compatibility problems with various players. A burned disc compressed for two hours or less has the best compatibility about 85 percent, while a disc that has six hours of recorded material has about a 40 percent compatibility factor.

MEDIA: No-name brand DVDs may be inexpensive, but they can contribute to playback problems. Generally, such discs have poor surface consistency, which may result in a lack of information being recorded. Also, they tend to chip easily, which will contaminate the disc and recorded material will be lost over time. Branded DVDs, such as Maxell, Sony, FUJI, Taiyo Yuden and TDK, may last a lifetime and are worth the investment.

DAMAGE: Scratches, dust, fingerprints and prolonged exposure to light may affect recorded material. Keeping DVDs in a hot environment can cause warping. I like to store my DVDs in a dark- colored case, in an upright position in a cool place. Avoid affixing labels unless you have a very good device, like CD Stomper, that properly centers them. Some DVDs have printable surfaces, and are usually identified with a "P" in the part number. They require a printer such as the Epson 960 to allow printing on the face of the DVD. But at no time should you imprint on the recorded side of the disc.
